Just wondering if anyone on here has done this half chassis swap?
And if so, what was the difficult level?

Was thinking of ordering the 1/4 chassis, but then saw this and was like hmm….

Cheers

Based on where I am with my (full frame off) rebuild, and the pictures of the half-chassis vs. the quarter, the half replacement involves a lot more dismantling and re-assembly than the quarter.

It seems to me I have seen articles in some of the LR magazines documenting the quarter replacement, and you have to remove the rear spring shackles, muffler and the rear tub attachment fasteners on the rear cross member, to get the old quarter out and new in - you may actually be able to get away with not removing the rear tub (and so not removing the roof, floor, seat box, door sills), although it would be close quarters work cutting the chassis section off and welding the new one on with the tub in place.

From the looks of the half chassis, you will have to remove the roof, floor, seat box, rear tub, probably door sills, exhaust, fuel tank, rear driveshaft, rear axle and springs and shocks, and of course re-install all that when the chassis part is done. Depending on the condition of the various fasteners which hold all that together, you will either shear some of them off or be forced to cut some off as you go along. Oh yes, there's brake lines, usually I think they run to a junction which is attached on the right longitudinal frame member in a place you may not have to disturb if doing the quarter but will for sure need to at least be detached, protected and re-installed with the half. Things like fuel tank hoses and fittings can be fine left alone but once disturbed may fail and need replacement...then there's wiring...so, potentially a lot more work to do the half.

Right more work for sure, but just may need to go this route. I'll have to check the chassis and see how bad the rear is anyway.

make sure you check around the bump stops...the chassis tends to rot under the bump stops as it is a great collector for muck and moisture.

The only way to tell is to remove the bump stops and give the underside a good wack with a hammer...good luck.

On my rebuild each area under the bump stops needed repair. (x4)

Good luck.
