I am new to the club. The calendar shows a run this Sunday, but no specific details on the time and meeting place. Is the event confirmed? I am checking so that I can make preparations to re-schedule some of the usual family activities on Sunday.
I am looking forward to meeting everyone on Sat at the Founders Day event.

Yes, the Snow Flake Chase has become some what of a Rover-Lander tradition for the Sunday after Founders Day (Jan 25th).
Keep that date clear on your calendar, the long range forecast is looking really good. 8)
For those who haven't done it before its basically a one day off-road adventure into the local mountains with the aim to find and play in snow .... check out the last years runs in the 2014 gallery for photos.
All the Event details / times / locations will be posted up this weekend,
cheers
Andy

Snow Flake Chase - Sunday Jan 25th 2014
What - a fun day off road run into the Beautiful local mountains in the search for snow.
Where - in the area north east of Mission - lunch will hopefully be at the beautiful and frozen Kenyon Lake
When - meeting at the Subway Restaurant on Highway 7, Mission (34963 Lougheed highway) at 9.00am, grab some breakfast and a take out lunch - There is a gas station (Co-Op) that does Petrol and Diesel next to the Subway. If you need fuel, fuel up first when arriving, departing at 9.30am sharp. Back on the highway around 4.00pm.
Why - Fresh mountain air, the adventure, beautiful scenery, to find snow & have fun!
Dress warm, bring a shovel, Tug strap, boots, packed lunch (or buy lunch at Subway), bring your camera, family friendly run.... come on out and join us on the first Rover-Landers club run of the year!
Cheers, Andy

Was this run scouted recently?
I am just wondering about tire requirements, I am running regular snows this time of year instead of the 18"s on 55 series rubber.......
Are we looking at snow covered rocks or fairly standard FSR conditions?

Yes, your M&S tires will be fine. Only expecting 6 to 12 inches of snow. There is nothing too rocky or icy, we tend to keep this run fairly simple due to the limited hours.

If anyone wants to see where they went today, the file in the following Dropbox link can be opened in Google Earth or Garmin Basecamp or similar:

This was tracked using a DeLorme Earthmate PN-60, but there are probably phone apps for that now!

Post Trip Report
It was a good turn out, 13 vehicles gathered on a mild sunny morning in Mission.
We took an easy run up the East side of Stave Lake with the intention of visiting Kenyon Lake for lunch with a detour up to a look-out point on the way. There were some interesting loose hill climbs and a couple of fun wash-outs along the way to keep us entertained. A couple of us had scouted this area the week before so we knew there was at least 6" of snow at the lake and the lake was frozen solid. A perfect choice for the Snow Flake Chase ... or so we thought! Over the week since we scouted we kept hearing things on the news like "record warm weather" "retreating snow levels" the "warm Pineapple express" .... and they weren't kidding. When we arrived at the Lake which was a winter wonderland the week previous, now it looked like spring! No sign of any snow, sun was shining, green grass everywhere.... I did manage to find a handful of snow in the dark shadow of a treed area, so promptly "baptised" each Land Rover with a snow ball and declared the Snow Flake Chase for 2015 successful - Mission accomplished!
We all spent an hour having a relaxing lunch besides the still half frozen Kenyon Lake and admired this beautiful spot in our local wilderness. It was a great day out with some very friendly Rover-Landers, roll on Spring time,
Cheers,
Andy
I have posted a bunch of photos of the run in the gallery -link below (I forgot my camera, so sadly taken on my Blackberry)
If anyone has any more of the run, send them into Bill and he will post up. I saw lots of fancy cameras out on Sunday!
