80-90w EP oil. AKA Gear oil.

Now the arguments start! GL 4? or does it really matter? Why even discuss GL4 vs GL5? Because you can't just pick up GL4 anymore as just about nobody sells it unless they are charging 5 times the price of the next best thing. Due to the yellow metals in your Series gearboxes there is a possibility that after running it with GL5 oil for a billion miles you might get degradation of the bronze/brass.

My local "Mobile One" oil change joint claims they have GL4 in stock for normal money. I'm skeptical but the guy wheels and knew right away what I was talking about and uses it himself for his old Jeep. You can also find GL4, but in a 20 litre pail, at you local Chevron Bulk plant. Probably the easiest to find would be Redline MT-90 for a GL-4 gear oil designed for gearbox use of the correct viscosity.

well 80-90 gear oil seems like the easiest option. how much oil would this trans take?
im guessing the transfer case uses the same stuff?

As stated though... A normal 80W-90 gear oil has a couple of problem in the gearbox. First the additives can corrode the synchros. Second the friction characteristics are poor for good synchro function. Proper gearbox oils are designed to have higher friction in order to give better synchro function. This is part of the reason a lot of manufacturers used to specify engine oil in the gearboxes.

You can download the workshop manuals here: http://www.landroverweb.com/landrover/p ... r-manuals/ All of the fluid capacities and specs are in there.

Let me know if you find any. I never forund any mineral based stuff here on the island. All I could find d was synthetic GL4 (redline) cost me about $100 to fill my gearbox, transfer case and overdrive!

I found a 20 litre pail of 80W90 at Canadian Tire a couple of weeks ago. It's their "Certified" house brand, but meets GL4 and GL5 specs. It was around $65 if I recall.
