Any Defender 300TDi 10AS Immobiliser experts out there?

#1 Post by withabix » Fri Nov 21, 2014 12:59 pm

Immobiliser died on arrival at meet-up at ABC in Burnaby last night, resulting in no dinner (Booooo!) and a free flat-deck ride back to Abbotsford from BCAA.

Seems I have the 10AS in the instrument binnacle rather than the Spider under the seat.

Immobiliser LED went out on the dash and the interior lights started flashing on and off - I can't find any reference to this as a 'fault signal' online or in the workshop manual, but I guess it must be!

Are any of you experts on diagnosing the fault, fixing it and then getting rid of the 10AS?

Spare fob doesn't reset it, so I'm guessing it's not the battery in the fob that has died.

I'm going to start with battery disconnection/reconnection and see if that resets the 10AS, followed by checking fuses including the one in the instrument binnacle (10AS is powered from 3 circuits/sources I think, involving an interior fuse, an under-bonnet fuse and one in the binnacle).

Most online stuff relates to Discos, although I have found a thread on a similar problem, started by another owner of another 1997 Defender which originated in Germany, like mine...

I've had mine go off in the Disco a few times. Usually the key fob should reset it. I've also had luck locking and unlocking the driver's door.

How is the battery? Mine goes flat between runs and all hell breaks loose when I put the charger on it. (Removing fuse #4 at least lets it panic in silence.) Once the battery voltage is reasonable, it starts behaving again.

What about disconnecting the battery, shorting the car's battery terminal wires and leaving it like that overnight? (Do NOT short the battery!) The capacitors should all drain and everything should boot up again when the power is reconnected.

Once reconnected, you could try the 'learn a new key fob' procedure then and see what happens.

What is the immobilizer actually immobilizing? I know it's very deeply buried in the innards of my V8 (injectors, etc), but I thought the Tdi needed very few electrics to run. Can you just bypass whatever isn't getting power?

NOTE: I know Range Rovers (Mk III) do NOT like their batteries disconnected. I didn't think Defenders were very fussy, but please check the Manual before trying it.

Good luck. As for removing the :angryfire: immobilizer, JLR has made this as difficult as possible - for obvious reasons.

In my opinion, Defenders should be as simple as possible if it were my truck I would rip out all that immobilizer crap right away, install a "secret" switch that kills power to the injection pump stop solenoid ( probably all that gee gaw does anyways ) and if you're really worried about theft a locking battery cut off switch in the seatbox

I would prefer no immobiliser. Up until now, it was working, so I didn't touch it....

Removing the 10AS will need specialist knowledge, as it is not as simple as the Spider (which just needs two rivets drilling out and the Spider replacing with a $15 plug with four bypass wires in it).

I can't find details on the internet for the removal of a 10AS, as all the threads about it keep it a secret (presumably to keep auto electricians wealthy!).

Hopefully I can get it going with a battery disconnection and a check of the three relevant fuses, otherwise it will need to go in to someone for fixing.

Does anyone know if Keith Robinson in Langley is still 'doing' Landies? I presume Aart Vanderstar only deals with Series ones?

Fixed for now - just needed the battery disconnecting and shorting the leads!

If I had thought about it on Thursday night, I might have had my dinner! (and a trip out today. Rats.)

Yes, Keith is still going strong.

Aart keeps busy with Defenders, not just Series trucks. He's been great with my 'high tech' Discovery 1. If you go, count the Range Rovers in the bushes. I find a new one that I've missed every time. :D

Glad to hear you're up and running. Once you've solved it, any problem is easy. I just spent two days doing a 30 minute plumbing job. Now, if I had to do exactly the same job again...
