We had to travel the connector with the 300TDi Disco 1.

After chugging along for five minutes or so around 70 K, I saw I was generating smoke. Not a whole lot, not black, but not pure white either. It looked as if I had spilled oil onto the exhaust manifold (something I've done before, but not this time), and the smoking continued until the top - about 15 Kms. It didn't occur again on that long climb once I turned south at the entrance to the Coke at Merritt. I checked trans fluid later on (while hot), but since there isn't a "full" line for testing while hot, and since I could see significant fluid on the dipstick, I figured I was safe.

Perhaps the hot motor was just burning off spilled oil, but I thought I'd check in case anyone has experienced this...

I had a similar experience with the 300TDI in my Defender in exactly the same location, but in February in -25C temperatures, rather than the +35 to 40C you probably had this week.

My smoke was white though - unburnt diesel.

I did get the temp gauge well into the red zone as well - belt driven radiator fan

My guess was maybe dry air, higher altitude = inadequate combustion possibly?

Not sure what caused my temperature rise - I had a full load on board and maybe I got ice/snow blinding the radiator??

When I was driving through Montana and Idaho last week I noticed we were pushing out a lot more black smoke than usual. Air filter, fuel pump etc all seemed good.

Is there any reason a 200 tdi would be pushing more black smoke in the hot weather?

D'you suppose the altitude had anything to do with that? What about having adjusted the thingey that gives more power AND more black smoke?

Bad tank of fuel? Are you saying it is fine now?

Ya, it's fine. Stopped smoking when I reached the top of the Connecter, and the load on the engine was dramatically reduced.

Need to be careful of exhaust gas temps when pushing it hard up mountain passes. My 200tdi exhaust got so hot pulling my Sankey over the Rogers pass, a couple of years ago, that the firewall insulation caught fire from the hot down pipe after the turbo.
