Re: so whats the deal on the CDL
Hi Bill,
My understanding is this;
Basically up to 2000 all Disco 11's had the Center Diff Lock and the spigot activation lever.
Then 2001 to 2002 it was an option, but if you didn't want it as an option they just took off the activation spigot lever leaving the "guts" still in there.
Then 2002 to 2003 if you didn't want the CDL option there was nothing in there, no "guts" and no activation lever.
Then in 2004 I believe they starting fitting it again as standard.
So you can see it's a bit of a crapshoot! The quickest way to confirm is to look at the forward most end of the transmission, if you have the spigot / activation lever then it's pretty certain that you have the "guts" too. Then all you need to turn it on is the cable kit or as some do, roll under the truck with a wrench and turn it on manually.
If you don't have the spigot / activation lever, you may still have the "guts" in there but you will need to buy a cable kit with the spigot and lever (search Ashcroft CDL kits for Discovery for more info on the kits).
Worst case scenario is you don't have the lever or the "guts" which means you will have to buy both, (there are plenty of Discos at the wreckers these days so not so bad).
Yours being a 2002 then in theory you should have at least the "guts" and maybe the lever too ....
Let us know what you find?
Cheers,
Andy

Re: so whats the deal on the CDL
You can also pull the front housing with CDL from any other LT230. Junk yard Disco 1 is usually the simplest. It can be done with the transfer case in the vehicle.
The actuator is the expensive bit, so if you found one for a good deal, that is a good find.
If you are planning to use this off road, I would suggest installing a one piece cross shaft in the CDL while it is out.
