New Discovery

There's a new one coming up. I think it looks very cool and the high tech gadgets look like they will be fun.
It's all aluminium and a big step away from the D3/D4 styling.
And sorry traditional LR fans, it doesn't seem to have any solid axles, leaf springs or a 300Tdi anywhere!
It also seems they are going to be getting a lot harder to keep track of. Everything Land Rover that's not a Defender or a Range Rover will now be a Discovery. There will be a Discovery, a fancy ('almost a Range Rover') Discovery, a small Discovery (byebye LR2/Freelander name), etc. They will met or exceed the three 'Range Rovers' that we have now.

One of the classic design cues is the rear alpine window. Sad to see the Vision Discovery does stand out in this area. However, it is nice to see some pioneering features being highlighted for the future.

I hadn't noticed the lack of alpine windows. That is a shame as they've always been a Series2+/Defender/Disco trademark.

My bias to the old disco aside, they've defiantly got away from traditional discovery styling cues. No more boxy shapes, or the ever so distinctive roof tumor. One thing I think that we should all remember is that the interior will look nothing like the concept. Not even close. The exterior is a compleatly different story though. I think LR has gotten into a bit of a habbit lately of putting concepts into production. Then again, LR is a compleatly different company.

Why do I get the feeling that I am looking at Land Rover's version of a Pontiac Aztek???

Its the ugliest land rover by far! It looks like they make them uglier every time. They clearly don't have the British soul the old ones have.

Are we looking at the same photo? I looked at the photos in the first post in this thread. The ones posted by CRS. Where are you looking that you don't see the traditional "Alpine Window" or the "roof tumor". The angle of the photos is low, but I'm damn sure that raised portion at the back half of the roof would be your "tomor", and on that is a dark area that I am sure must be the Alpine Window you think is missing. Could be just shading, but those two items caught my eye right away and I thought "Good. They kept the alpine window and raised roof as styling connection to the older versions." Maybe we need to wait 'til the real one shows up in a local dealers lot.

This is a great video on the cool features of the new Disco. Minute 1.02 in the video shows no alpine windows. However, the full length skylight more than compensates for the lack of alpine windows.

approach angle - bad
breakover angle - worse
departure angle - useless

Does anyone remember when they brought an evoque to founder's day and it couldn't get on the ramp?

If I remember correctly, they DID get it on the ramp. But not very far. And removed quite a lot of expensive looking bits of plastic in doing so. (Off the Evoque, not the ramp! )

Simply crush them at the end of the line, thank you. If you can buy a Hyundai or Kia that provides better overall value and similar (lack of) styling - why bother. I'm truly sorry, but to say any of the new Land Rover models have any appeal stretches even the most ardent imagination. The new organization has ruined one of the best vehicle brands ever, and I hate them with every fiber of my Lucas possessed, leaky swivel soul.

I think it's a nice looking car, but it doesn't look like a Landie.

It looks a lot like the new Ford Explorer.

But then, Ford bought Land Rover, and learned everything they could. For example, the Terrain Response Dial in the new Explorer looks IDENTICAL to whats in the Rovers.

Oh yeah, and the chief designer of the new Explorer came from Land Rover...

I think I would just buy a new Explorer and save 20 grand, and have cheaper parts and maintenance.

And then keep my 110 and Series 1s forever...
