Series IIa front half shaft question and Hub assembly questi

#1 Post by andrewMcF » Wed Apr 16, 2014 9:03 am

I've rebuilt my swivel ball on one side of my 88" but what I've noticed is that half shaft slides in and out of the diff, as it should I'm guessing as I believe they call this floating axles... So here's my question, I've put the half shaft back in and pushed it all the way into the diff, I've put the stub axle back on and the hub and now it's time to put the castle nut back but do I pull the half shaft out some or until it stops I'm not sure how or where to position the half shaft.

I do have another question about the bearings and lubricant for the hubs. When I rebuilt my swivel I cleaned up my bearings on the hub and they look healthy, my question is about lube... I've packed them up with grease but isn't the hub supposed to have some sort of oil in it? I have Warner hubs so there is no oil port like on the back hubs...

I would look in my manuals but I've seem to have miss placed them during our house reno... I think the wife threw them out hoping I'd give up on my Rovers... lol

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Yes, just tighten the flange nut up to hold the stub axle.

You pack the bearings with grease. Oil from the swivel will wash the grease out over time.

It just seems so odd that the half shaft can move so much...

On my other SIIA 109 I some how have messed this up as I put new disk brake conversion(Rocky Mountain ones, thanks Jeremy) on it and now when I engage the hubs there is a very concerning clicking sound... and I wonder if the half shaft is too far in or out...?

Maybe the hubs are not engaging properly? Was the retaining nut installed inside the hub?
