2.5 NA Diesel & LT76 into a Series IIA - what's required?

#1 Post by Kelster1055 » Tue Jan 21, 2014 11:06 am

Hello Y'all,
After much deliberating over TDi Engines, Gearboxes, Transfer Boxes, CV vs U joints, Axles Changes vs Free-wheel hubs, New Motor Mounts, Cross Members and Longer Prop-shafts, I think I've decided to take the path of less resistance and lower cost. I plan to purchase a rebuilt 2.5 NA diesel to replace the 2.25 petrol power plant in my 1970 Series IIA 88. I know it's not a TDi 200 but I think I can live with that until I can afford the Defender of my dreams.

I'm also going replace the Non-synchro SIIA gearbox with a rebuilt Series III LT76 tranny with synchro in all 4 gears. I also have a Fairey Overdrive to install, which gives me 5 forward speeds, (well 8 actually, but that's another story).

I believe all of the above is a 'drop-in replacement' and should not require any new motor mount hangers or gearbox/transfer box hangers, cross members, etc. The only modifications that I'm aware of are... new larger diameter exhaust, throttle linkage is likely different, fuel system will now be diesel which might require an external pump, SIII clutch set-up is different, I'll need a fuel cutoff and some other electrical changes.

Have I missed anything?

As I understand it the right side mount needs to be modified and the battery box moved. Just Google 2.5NA into Series and you will see a bunch or writeup of how people have done it.
