2.25 Diesel glow plugs

#1 Post by andrewMcF » Tue Jan 07, 2014 11:19 am

I am running a old 2.25 diesel engine in my SIIa 88" and I'm having issues with my glow plugs, specifically with the coil voltage regulator(if that's what it's called...The glowing thing). The 2.25 diesel engine is a shaker, big time and the nuts seem to like to come loose on the regulator and that causes short in the connecting wires (they aren't snug anymore so the lose connection doesn't pass the energy through the coil efficiently translating into melting wires...) and then smoking and burning and cold glow plugs... also the isolating washers have cracked from me trying to tightening them down... This is a newish setup with prob glow plugs, not the old coils.

I'm looking on going two ways on this, one way is to find a modern replacement and if so what are the readings supposed to be after the regulator. I volt metered the one side and it looks like it took the voltage down to 1V from the the 12V... but what about amps and watts... which I know nothing about...

The other direction is to firm up the current unit that I have. That means replacing the isolating washers with ones that aren't cracked and keeping the nuts from working themselves off... A friend suggested locktight as it's good to a bazillion degrees apparently...

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Andrew
