Moving my 88 rrc engine rebuild over from the technical questions forum. It started out as a 3.5 head gasket replacement, but the wear in the engine warranted....another engine. Here' the upside down dirt turtle of a 3.5 -

Here the 3.9 I'm working to put in - it seems in overall good shape. I tore it down to put new gaskets and have now had the heads pressure checked and resurfaced. I also found an old BOP all steel double roller timing set to install -
The 3.5 lacked an oil cooler so I'll need to work out an alternative for the 3.9. I have trans cooler I think will work if I can find a place to mount it.

I have a brand new B&M Hi-tech oil cooler going spare... this one http://www.jegs.com/i/B-M/130/70298/100 ... tId=751118

Bought it for my D100 build before I got my Allisport rad with intergrated cooler, It's fitted with NPT/BSP adaptors at present for easy connection to the sandwich plate.

Will take $180 + S&H for it.

Thanks Andy! I found a 1990 RRC in my local boneyard (well actually Row52 alerted me to its arrival and I jumped on it like a horny soldier) and I found a good later model rad with the oil cooler and transmission cooler fitted to the side tanks. I had the rad rodded and cleaned and viola!

That truck went to the yard with all kinds of good spares (new belts, hoses rad cap etc), and it had a great upper tailgate. So it was totally xmas for me that day, even if I did have to lay on my back in a snow storm to get it all.

A little bit closer. Looks like if this week goes well, I'll have fire in the holes this weekend.

.....and it's all together! Next step - turn the ignition key. Yikes.

This is where you find out if you left any of those pesky little, impossible to reach, water hose clamps loose that are under and behind everything!
Make sure you get all the air pockets out of the cooling / heater system.

Good point Andy - I usually run the engine to operating temperature with the heat on and the radiator cap off to bleed the air out of the coolant flow. Does the expansion tank work OK for this on the RRC's do you know - or should I plan on opening the rad?

it is alive! It started right up - the timing was just about spot on. There's a bit of a vacuum leak somewhere....of course:)

There should be a coolant air bleeding tower on the left side of the engine on the heater hoses that head behind the engine and through the bulkhead. This is the "high spot" and is typically a brass nut.

The 1988 model year didn't seem to have the bleeding tower - ours certainly didn't. From what I've seen on other RRCs - the tower seems to have come in around 1990 or 1991. I'm making due with expansion tank for now - I may jack up the front of the truck and stick long neck funnel in the radiator hole if it doesn't completely burp. It seems to being OK for now.

So far - the oil cooler adapter leaks some oil and there's some ATF dribbling from somewhere...oh well.

I love this vintage of rover, never owned one but come close a few time. They seem to look even better as they get older.
