Few questions about my DII

#1 Post by Discovery » Wed Aug 28, 2013 6:07 pm

So I've owned my '01 D!! for about 6 months now, and I'm really enjoying the ownership of this rig. Been on many travels and adventures since I purchased it. Since then, suspension upgrading has been on my mind, but before I get into lift kit suggestions, I have one question; is the rear end normal to be soft? (coil and spring, no air suspension). I've noticed that when I go over speed-humps, or general dips along the roads, the rear end tends to bounce alot. I'm curious if that's normal? In my mind, I keep thinking I need new shocks, or a stiffer spring (or both) to have less bounce, but not ruin the articulation/off-road performance.

If the case is only to replace worn out shocks, I'm most likely going to replace them with Bilsteins (not sure which, but keeping ride hide stock).

With regards to lift kits, I'm looking for a 1.5" - 2" lift, but curious about how they work. Does the spring lift the vehicle to the desired height?

Thanks!
Gregory

It doesn't sound like it's soft. You describe shock absorbers that are worn out or missing.

Yes, just worn out shocks. Look into Koni 8240SPX, talk to these guys: http://overseas-auto.com/

Most "lift kits" are simply stiffer springs that raise ride height and new shocks (that are more or less the same as stock). This makes the truck ride higher, with stiffer spring rates (allowing more load and ground clearance under the chassis). Road handling and mileage will be worse.

I would not put on a lift unless you "need" it. If you find you need more chassis clearance and/or more load capacity.
