Sunroofs stopped working on D2

Sunroofs worked one day and not the next. If it's not a fuse, what do I look for next?

Thanks,

9 times out of ten it is always the motor, you should run around with a volt meter just to be sure.

Front and rear motors quit at the same time?

I presume you've looked through the RAVE diagrams to understand the common points. Looks like fuses 12 and 29 are related. Possible bad electrical connections at the sunroof ECU (perhaps corrosion related if you've had leaking?).

It also looks like there's a common ground for all sunroof operations. It looks like there should be a brown 3 connector plug in the RH A pillar for this ground.

I'm guessing here -- I have not had the headliner out of my D2 yet, so I don't have a clear understanding of the complete system component layout. If both motors quit at the same time, I'd look at power supply and ground first.

Thanks Steve, I'm not at home this weekend but would like to check fuses and such.

Having no tools around except two screwdrivers, I pulled some fuses, they looked fine (no tester here either), so I flipped them and put them back in.

I have noticed that when I press the sunroof switches "something" tries to happen (kind of a click). Might this be a ground (like when a batter isn't connected properly and it'll work the solenoid but not turn over the starter)?

I didn't find any connectors behind the covers on either the LH or RH A-pillars: just wires. The dismantling continues...

When I use the switches it sounds like something's trying to happen (like a relay switching?), but the motors are not actuated.

I've pulled down the plastic part above the sun visors to view motor and such, but can't locate the ground connection; do I have to pull down the whole headliner? Might this be the sunroof ECU?

Did you locate the relays? Sounds like a likely culprit ......

There is no simple answer, just start at the most obvious things, fuses, ground, relays and then progress to the more difficult to reach parts.

Frustrating I know ......

That clicking sound you hear is the relay clicking. If it was broken, it probably wouldn't be clicking. There's a chance that it's faulty inside and although it's "firing" it isn't actually making any connection. Try testing the voltage immediately "after" the relay in the circuit vs ground and it should either pass or not pass the voltage along.

I don't know very well how the sunroof computer works but if the relays that tell the motors to run are firing, then the computer is good (since it controls the relays, right?). If both motors suddenly stopped working, it's got to be something common to both of them.
