So... I want to know if anyone has ever done this or knows if it's even possible...

The ABS pump/electric motor/pressure switch from the P38 and the classic both look the same and from the pictures, the electrical connections look the same, too. The only physical difference appears to be the P38 unit has the accumulator built in and the classic has it as a detached unit mounted down the line.

Mine needs a new ABS pump as some of you may have seen but it doesn't make sense to replace it without the accumulator as well. And it seems like it would be much cheaper to get hold of a P38 pump/accumulator unit.

I can't see immediately why I couldn't just mount the P38 unit in, and get a new brake line made to "bypass" where the original accumulator was before. It should work exactly the same as before only piped differently, yes? I don't need to change the ABS computer or the valve block or anything else, just the pump/accumulator.

Do you guys suppose this would actually work or am I out to lunch? Any reason it wouldn't?

Alright, I couldn't really find any solid information online but the parts LOOK the same and they appear to have the same electrical connections as well. I've decided "F@%& it! I'm going to try!" so I'm going to source one (anyone have a P38 pump assembly?) and take a stab at it. I've heard they're a bit more reliable than the one in the classic and I like that the unit is all-in-one rather than having to buy the accumulator as well. It's actually cheaper this way.

So yeah, anyhow... Once I have it figured out, I'll post about it so others in the same boat as me can follow suit. I've also heard rumor that early '90s Jaguar XJ6 have a similar setup and can be modified to work but I'm not prepared to try my hand at that. Baby steps. I'm only good with electronics and engines, not really any other parts of the vehicle. :?

The issue you're going to come across, is not necessarily hooking up the lines, but making the computer work. I'd imagine that the tooth count on the abs ring would be different, and that would start causing all kinds of issues with braking. Also, the p38 system incorporates a traction control system, and all I can see is issue after issue with that. I'd say ether pony up the money for the proper replacement, or convert it over to a discovery system.

I don't plan on using the P38 computer or the ABS brake block/system... The computer and the valve block and all that stuff is still working just fine on mine. I just plan on using the P38 the pump and accumulator. That's all. I really think it will work, I can't see why it wouldn't. The pressure switch will turn the pump on/off, the accumulator will hold the pressure... Otherwise my brake system will remain unchanged.
