I am puting back together my rear end and I am wondering about the hub end float . What is the best procedure for tensioning the hubs without the special tool to measure the float?? Also should there be about a one sixteenth inch space between the hub and the brake backing plate? I don't recall when I took it all apart. Seems like dirt and such would end up in there. :)

Tighten the hub nut a little past hand tight. Spin the hub to make sur ethe bearings are seated and chec tightness. Back off and tighten till just snug. Put on washer and lock nut and torque to spec.

The end float measurement was the old way and is a PITA and certainly not needed.

This is the current Defedner description from the manual, section 51:
10. Clean stub axle.
11. Fit hub assembly to stub axle.
12. Fit spacing washer.
13. Fit hub adjusting nut. Tighten to 50 Nm (37
lbf/ft). Ensure hub is free to rotate with no
bearing play. Back off adjusting nut 90° and
tighten to 10 Nm (7 lbf/ft).
14. Fit a new lock washer.
15. Fit locknut. Tighten to 50 Nm (37 lbf/ft).
16. Tab over lock washer to secure adjusting nut
and locknut.
17. Using a new joint washer fit axle shaft to hub.
Tighten bolts to 65 Nm (48 lbf/ft)."
