Solex Spot the Difference (The Missing Pipe)

Hello,
I recently bought (e-bay) a replacement Solex for my SII 88. To my delight, the new unit came with the optional heating element which I hope will mitigate the carb icing problem that I always have. I have the new unit in the car now and it works well.
The new unit is missing a pipe that extends down the carb venturi that the old unit had. This pipe is not shown or mentioned in the Green Bible shop manual. I wonder if any of you knowlegable experts here know what the missing pipe is for. I'll attach a picture of the old and new carb with the pipe in question circles.

Hi Paul,
I've checked bot my Series one manual and Series 2 manual neither one shows that second pipe? So can't help you there. Are there any casting numbers on the carbs? Are they different?

Could it possiblly be a vent pipe for the float chamber?

I've done a bit of googling and found one reference (with pictures!) of Solexes with and without the tube. Seems that it is called a "Venturi Tube" and it matches up with a blanked off port in the carb body. No mention of what it does though. Victor's idea of a float chamber vent might be right as I gues it could supply a bit of vacuum mto the top of the chamber on an open throttle. (?)
The new carb is working well so I'm not too worrried, just curious.

Actually, reading further down on the above referenced link, it seems that this extra pipe is called an "Econostat Jet" and is used to supply more fuel at high RPM open throttle demandes for the "larber 2.25 Land Rover engines". "The Econostat provides for meximum economy to be maintained over the cruising range of the engine..."

I might try and retrofit the cct to my new carb... Sounds like fun. :wink:

Thanks for the link ,very interesting that solex is almost as complicated as a race type webber carburator. It would be interesting to compare the 2 solexs on a dyno.
My dormobile had the 2 tube design originally, 70 mph flat out, 20 mpg. 7:1 compression. I now have a single barrel webber 70 mph flat out 20 mpg. 8:1 compression no overdrive. ** (It does not get 20 mpg driving at 70 mph thats happens at 55mph)
I really could not tell a differance between the solex and the webber but the solex was getting worn out so who knows. Good luck with your new carb.
