Drove a BRAND NEW Land Rover tonight.

Well---Brand New to me, well, new anyway, well, maybe not new, but I drove it.
The 90 I bought at the Parksville auto auction is finally on the road. I got the seals and things I needed and found the time to do the work, then after dinner I went and swapped the plates and insurance to the 90 from the 109 and took her for a drive. The 2.5 naturally anemic diesel is nice and quiet, but as I expected, not very fast. She couldn't go 100 km/h even on the slightest incline. She could do it easily downhill however. Much quieter than the 2.25 petrol in the 109. The power steering is nice, so are the power disc brakes. It's a little twitchy but I attribute that to the short wheel-base. Now I have to find out things like when 24 spline shafts came in and how to tie the rear flap properly. Erica wants my next project to be bolting the windows to the doors so it doesn't look like they're going to fall off. Then I have to figure how to attach the roof tent above the canvas top. Oh...(sigh)... the learning curve! Haven't I put all that education stuff behind me yet?

Hi Greg,
Congrats on your "maiden voyage". Good to hear she is up and running!
Did you figure out the starting issue?
I have seen a roof top tent mounted on a roofrack that is mounted on a external roll cage. The canvas top still exists under the external roll cage.. sounds expensive though!
100 kph  you'll have to get yourself a radar detector next :laughing5:

Guess you will just have to sell it to me for my hardtop 110

 I've seen the swb with a truck cab and the tent on the box. Which still allows you to store your gear below the tent. If the tent is mounted this way is it still called a roof top or a box top

It should manage 100 km/h easily. Maybe it needs some tuning up. What transfer case is in it?
It could have 10 or 24 spline rear shafts as they were both available. Check the serial number stamped on the axle. 22S is 10 spline with 2 pinion diff, 23S is heavy duty 24 spline with 4 pinion diff.

I've been driving it for over a month now and have almost 10,000 Km on it. It sure smokes going up the "Hat". I haven't crawled underneath yet to find out which T case I have but I know I have the many spline axle, must mean it's four pinion I guess. More work to do on her. Like rear bushings. It was like a new vehicle today!!! Yahoo! I bought a Exmoor seat from Dixon and put the seat base in before going to work this morning. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I must sit about four inches higher and can see over the spare tire now. Must add about 5 horse power too. Can't wait till tomorrow to mount the seat back and see how much improvement that gives.
I mounted the 255 85 16 tires a couple weeks ago (about 6% larger) and using the GPS to determine speedo error (correction) find I'm slowed to about 70 kph going up the "Hat" but that is also kicking it down two gears and roaring the poor old engine. I can get it to 100 kph but with a bit of work and lots of space. I've even been able to whip it to 110 in a long downhill stretch. (To you unbelievers out there; "These are the real numbers.")

Check the t. case serial number for the ratio.
I would first check timing. Mark it well and advance it a bit. It only takes a couple of minutes. If it revs freely and does not ping more than it should, you are not over advanced.
Run a good dose of a diesel fuel conditioner through it as well.
If it is smoking (lot of fuel) and setup well, it should cruise at 100 on the coast without trouble. 110 on the flats with no headwind is quite doable as well. 100 all day long should be easy.
I assume the air filter is clean?

i think you will gain at least another 5km/hr top speed if you post some pictures here.. :)

Sorry folks, I lied. I've only done about 6000 k not 10.
My son advanced the timing to the point it barely ran. I put it back near the original setting but still a bit advance. I think I want to get it back to original and see if it's better. "not ping more than it should" ???
% hp just for posting some pictures? Darn! I'll do that as soon as I can.

hey greg , i have an exmod 86 lr90 2.5 n/a diesel [ 85000 kms ] . for about a year i ' diddled ' around with the timing and assorted adjustments in an attempt to cut the smoking issue with the 2.5 . a couple of years ago , i had to change the thermostat [ it was the original one with no temperature rating stamped on it ] . i popped in a new 180 degree thermostat ... the engine now runs hotter [ from less than a 1/4 as noted on the temperature guage scale with the old thermostat to now between 1/2 and 3/4 on the temperature guage scale ] . Voila , a hotter & cleaner running engine with significantly less smoking [ almost green yuk yuk ] ? it definately smokes less .
coincidence ?

Yes, possibly hard to explain. Diesels self ignite, so the noise of that is always there. When the advancement is too far, the sound is "too much". Whatever gives peak power is the correct spot. Are you sure you advanced and did not retard?
It should not smoke much at sea level. A little smoke is good. Too much means the fueling is set too high or something else is not right.
Making sure it is running at the right temperature is a good idea.
