The Rover-Landers of BC

hello all, new to the forum, and as of yesterday, new member of Rover-Landers.
I drive a 1984 (defender) 90, stock, as far as i know, except for Nissan LD28 NA diesel.... Have only owned the truck just over a year, so am pretty green about LR knowlege.
anyway...
drums on rear, discs on front...
wondering if i can replace calipers(frnt) w/ something more "north american" friendly...i.e. will Disco/RRC/late SIII calipers fit my truck...
i am not sure what info i might need to provide for a good answer, but am happy to reply w/ whatever info i can....thanks

Hi NP90

I think you're on the right track by looking to the (earlier) Disco and RRC for shared brake parts, as many components are shared. However, there are definitely some differences depending on year and model.

Take a look at the exploded catalogue views at www.roversnorth.com for an idea.

For example, Rovers North lists 2 different front brake kits and 3 rear brake kits... and in several different brands. Some of these kit part numbers are also offered for Discovery, but not all, so obviously not every year and model is the same. Some of the individual parts are offered for Defender, but when you look at the Defender brake pages, you'll see a variety of different brake parts used over the years.

Personally, I would take a look at Rovers North's Proline products as they are fairly cheap and in my experience stand up reasonably well.

Why? Bringing in proper parts is easy and cheaper than buying local parts.

unfortunately, i am trying to find an alternative to Rovers North... i have been in contact w/ them about this before, and they seem to think that the "only" calipers that will fit my rover happen to be "genuine"...($299 each) and the "only" pads that will fit must also be "genuine"...($98.00)
this is obviously USD, before shipping (quoted over $75), and of course brokerage...
i have had good experiences w/ them for other parts, but this seems a little steep.... anyway, i appreciate the response and will keep looking into it... thanks

There are lots of places to buy in the UK. Shipping is pretty reasonable and does not take that long.

I'm certainly not endorsing Rovers North, but I do use their exploded views to put a finger on the part I need.

Then, do your actual shopping where you get the best price. In my experience with Paddocks, they take about 2-3 days to process an internet order, and it goes out by Royal Mail, which takes about a week to get here. So it's a cheap and reliable place to get parts so long as you plan ahead. Note that those impossible to find (over here) little bits of hardware are often offered there for ridiculously low prices, so its worth doing a bit of shopping ahead when you put an order in with them.

As far as brokerage goes, it is not needed using the postal system. I find that about 1 in 4 incoming packages gets nailed for duty/taxes, and there is no brokerage fee, simply the raw cost of duty and taxes, paperwork done by Canada Post. You can sometimes make those odds even better by keeping each order to under $100 or so.

The problem with the RN parts diagrams is that they don't use LR part numbers. The proper parts catalogs can be found on the internet or you can purchase printed versions.

I also find postal shipping from the USA to take much longer than from the UK. Paddocks is not my first choice, but on this example, they seem to have the best deal. Lastly, always try to get branded or OEM level parts for anything "important".

On the brake pads also have a look at the shape to make sure someone has not changed calipers at some point.

going away to the states for a couple weeks, but i think i will order about half-way through so i have a nice present/project when i return.
