It will be here soon! Anyone coming over from the mainland this year?
Camping in the field is welcome and encouraged. I'd be glad to see anyone on Friday but things aren't really scheduled till Saturday the 12th. I have a good drive planned for Sunday for those who don't mind going off-road and getting some Island pin striping.

If you don't get here till Saturday, try to make it in the morning so you can get in on the lunch. Soon after lunch we'll be going for a drive to a local mountain top for the view and no scratch drive for those collector cars and highly waxed road biased Land Rovers.

Pot-luck dinner Saturday night and an evening shooting the breeze around the campfire round out the day. Sunday is the awards presentation at a local restaurant at breakfast followed by that off-road drive.

Sunday drive at CVLR Rally

Note! We have 2 drives at our Van Isle Rally. A "no scratch" drive on Saturday afternoon and a "scratch and dent possible" drive on Sunday that only the hardy usually come on.
My son David came with me yesterday just before dinner and we went for a little drive to confirm the Sunday "off-road" route was open. Please be aware that it is more than likely (it's going to happen) that you will get some westcoast pin striping (brush scratches). The route is narrow and there are some off-camber sections. Some of the off-camber sections are also at narrow sections (possible dents). I made it all the way through with my 109 inch wheelbase Series IIA station wagon. I admit I did scratch the rear cross member on the ground a few times, but not hard. I also tapped a couple things underneath but just noise, not damage. At the end of the route, just as I was getting to the road, (the last 8 feet) I brushed against a side hill and got a scratch in the rear of the box by the exhaust, I choose a poor path for this last few feet. I doubt a full size domestic pick-up truck could make this route due to the width but I'm pretty sure the Land Rover products could; but not with a roof rack. There are some narrow sections with steep drop-offs so care is needed with tire placement.

There is about ten miles of track and it is only 8 miles from my front door. It took us two hours to do it but David reminded me I was going about three times faster than I should have been, so I expect our Sunday group should be able to do the drive in five or six hours. If need be there are short-cuts out of the place if time is running short.

The MAY 2010 issue of Petersen's Four Wheel and Off-Road magazine have placed Duncan's "The Bitch Trail" as one of their recommended "Must Do" trails for every off-roader before they retire. This is the area we will be wheeling in! There are a number of designated trails in the area that Petersen's group included in their "Ultimate Challenge 2002" but I think for their May 2010 "Bucket List" of trails to do, they are lumping the whole area under the one name. If someone feels they are up to the challenge and have lockers front and rear, a winch and 35" tires or better, I can point them to the section that is the actual "Bitch Trail" otherwise we are in the general area and I think you will find it a challenge. Yesterday, we went through the trail I have in mind without getting stuck and without having to winch or cut any trees.

The "No Scratch" Saturday drive is clear and open and I made a phone call to the local Hang Gliding club. We may be lucky enough to catch some hang gliders taking off at the top of the mountain.

Hmm, sounds like a tasty trail.

Job #1 for Friday is now to get the new clutch cylinders in the D90 so I can attack this with gusto and, erm, a clutch.

Actually, that's really handy motivation as a couple of well known Land Rover nuts will be 'round my place at some point that day and can be roped in to help in required :)

a big thank you to Greg for hosting the Rally. Lots of fun, great members, great food, great weather and very fun drives.

Aryo and I had a wonderful time. he called it "Landy Camp" and wanted the next one to start tomorrow, he was very sad when i told him we had to wait another year.
