Engine and transmission rebuilds...

I will be looking into purchasing a series2/2a sometime in the summer and I was wondering who does rebuilds of engines and transmissions in the lower mainland? I possibly could do a rebuild myself but feel better leaving it to the pros.
Also I don't want to pay through the roof and want "reputable" rebuilders who use genuine parts, fair pricing, etc. Any idea on the costs of a 2.25 litre engine rebuild and a transmission rebuild? (ball park figure)

Thanks,

Twotter

Twotter,

If you're ever going to learn, you won't find a simpler setup than Land Rover! While I agree and engine rebuild is a daunting task, I have done lots of work on the different transmission gearboxes, and its not terribly hard if you have a haynes manual or better yet a factory manual. (and a very organized work area--all those parts can get confusing!)

If you haven't got one yet, you might be better off getting one with a rebuilt engine...I bought mine with a rebuilt engine, and so was denied the excitement of a DIY rebuild.

As for parts, your Vancouver sources are Ray Wood at Wise Owl Parts, 04 921 7277, or Aart Van Der Starr at UK Trek and Traction at 604 888 2813. In the interior, there's Alan at Rover Works, 250 494 0646. I would think any of these guys would be able to help point you in the direction of folks who rebuild, and they can definately help you out with parts.

Good Luck,

Make sure you know if it is a Series 2 or 2a, the 2 can be difficult to get some parts for. Also you will need the suffix of the gearbox, this can be found on the right side on the top cover of the gearbox. A suffix A is not great, B means that your transfer case low range is the lowest gear possible (good) but not as low in 1st. C-K is good, the later the better. A series III is a very different beast.
