Hello. When I bought the rover 40k ago, i changed all the fluids; i did the same this weekend, all was good except for the front diff which had about a teaspoon of metal filings stuck to the magnetic drainplug. I have never serviced a diff, any advice? Is there a shim/seal/gasket master kit or something? I guess i should just pull the cover and see - I cant till my fiat is up and going, about another week or so. Thanks.

Metal filings are never a good sign of course, but were there any chunks of broken teeth? A teaspoon seems like a lot but how acurate is that measurement? Have you noticed anything bad in the way of excessive noise or grinding? If you haven't had any operating problems and the filings on the drain plug are fine in consistency I would just put fresh oil in there and let things develop. Wear and tear on gears and bearings are incremental in nature usually, breakage is another matter.

I supose i should have washed the oil off in solvent to view the metal better. The metal appeared to be dark in colour and did not amount to much for grit when i wiped the drainplug clean. I supose i am more worried due to the substantial difference in metal between front and rear. Maybe i should have a look in 1000k?

Best place to get drivetrain parts? Dealer i supose?
