what are the tire reccomendations for whhipsaw?

AT"s or MT's

also would 29" or 30" be sufficient? i can go as big as 31's but i am not happy with my gearing, 29's are stock for my truck.

looking to get some different shoes for my Iltis and wanted to see what you reccomend.

Hi Reza,

One of the reasons that Whipsaw is so popular is the diverse terrains you get to go through on the trail. Depending on the time of year you can expect snow, rocks, gravel, mud, steep loose hill climbs, moguls and big water holes...
I would say A/T's can easily handle 95% of the trail but its nice (but not essential) to have the M/T's for the other 5% of the trail.
On saying that, we have seen Land Rovers go through with half worn road tyres!
One reason I would recommend the M/T's for you is Military vehicles just look better with M/T's 8)

I am throwing the option around as I want to do the whipsaw this year, MT's would be great but my truck is a daily driver i have to give a bit on the looks, unless i find a killer deal on a used set.
but if it was mandatory on the trail then i would go for a set of MT's

also what do you think regarding the size?

I have AT's on my 109 that I have used on the Whipsaw and also on the Canol trip last summer.

I agree with Andy that the MT's look better, but the AT's are a great wearing tire, good on the Highway, have a winter rating and have never let me down so far.

I was looking at the Hercules tires.

i can get a good deal on a set, i have heard a lot of good things regarding these tires, long life and good sidewalls for an AT. all the hercules are made by cooper Tires in the states.

Reza, do you have the stock size on there now? It looked like you had stepped up to a larger size for the snowflake chase. How is the on-road cruizing/off-road crawling with the current tires?

I have 7.50R16's (31's)on there now that i used on the snowflake chase run. these are 2 inches bigger than original at 29 inches (6.50R16's which are impossible to find)
they are great for the hwy and road but i have basically given up first gear for offroad. I was in granny gear (my only low gear) for most of that trip we did, it wasnt bad but i would rather be in first and save the low gear.

Unless i can find how to get more low RPM power (500-1500) easily out of my VW motor i will have to step down in size down to 30 or back to the original 29's. but i wasnt sure if these sizes would be good for following other trucks through whipsaw.

I suppose i am answering my own question and should go back to 29's and have better performance from the truck rather than a 1 inch tire lift.

I would agree that you've answered your own question. I think use of the right gear out-weighs the benefit of an inch of lift.

The tires you posted look like they are up to the job but they are unknown to me.(personally)

In my opinion, you get what you pay for. The club doesn't have shares in BFG :wink: and they are not the cheapest by far but you'll notice on our club runs that 90% of the trucks have BFG's. This is because they have a proven track record of being tough and reliable and that is what you need if you are way out in the middle of no-where...

As for size, keep in mind that most trails require a long road drive to get to the trail head and you'll want to get there a quick as possible! (all the fun starts at the trail head!) so that should be a large consideration if your tires are affecting gearing.

My AT's are also BFG's.

I like BFg's. but have heard nothing but good regarding cooper tires.

their MT apparently performs better than BFG MT's. but that is just info from the net and i have not tested them personally.

At this time i am still hunting around trying to see what is available. gotta get the best of both worlds if i am going to spend that much money.

Another tire i came across recently has bee the Federal Couragia M/T
Mud Tire.
seems to have good reviews also, the local tire shops here are comparing and reccomending them over the TOYO MTs but these have a much lower price tag. i was quoted $140/tire for the size below.

has anyone here tried these?

they also come in size 205/80R16. which is close to my original 6.5R16's. i believe this is a stock range rover tire size also..

so after the last trip down island to take my HAM course and having to go through a rainstorm and having my existing tires trying their best to throw my truck in the ditch, i had to breakdown and get a set of tires.

after much calling around and no one having the size i wanted i did what i was hoping to avoid and broke down and bought a set of goodyear wrangler territory from canadian tire as they had my size 225/75R16's, 10 Ply rating.

I was hesitant because of lack of info and reviews on these tires but after chatting with goodyear they said they were the same design as their goodyear Wrangler Duratrac which they sell for 250/tire.

they were on sale from 200 to 150 per tire at canadian tire so the price was good. with a complete 5 year warranty against any damage.

so i guess i will be the guinea pig for these tires.

Yep... the Goodyear Territories are great winter tires, I expect that they are also great all around tires but I've only been running them since the fall. Mine are studded to which is something that I will not do without in the winter again now that I've tried it.

I see these are on sale currently. Buy one, second half price.

basically the same deal that i got on my set. they just change the wording everytime they have the sale.
