Land Rover engine identification

I'm very new to the whole Land Rover scene, so please excuse my ignorance here. I recently imported a Series 3 109 Stage 1 fitted with a smaller diesel engine. I'm not sure if it's a 2.25 or 2.5l. Is there any easy way of identifying which it might be? It smokes a lot, and I suspect I shall have to do a major overhaul before it's working properly!
What should the compression be on these engines?

And how do I attach a photograph to these Forum notices? I'm sure that would help!

Martin,

I believe that the distributor pump (injection pump) is driven through the front cover on the 2.5 and thus lies horizontally as opposed to the vertically oriented pump on the 2.25 which is driven from the cam shaft.

If you do some youtube or other internet searches I think you will find enough pictures to make you id.

Smoking a lot may not indicate a serious problem. It could be simple timing or fueling. These engines like to smoke.
