My fan clutch is seized. Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to remove my fan clutch? I would prefer not to buy specialized tools, any suggestions?

I've changed mine in the spring. Done in just over an hour. (97 Disco)

1. Remove drive belt.

2. Using a strap type clamp wrench hold pump from turning. Loosen large nut at the back of the fan assembly.

Note: release nut by turning anti-clockwise! when view from the front of viscous unit.

3. Clamp fan assembly in vice on large nut, remove fan from clutch, held on with allen head bolts.

My viscous clutch was not seized but had 1" play fwd / aft movement. vibrated at idle, felt like a wheel out of balance, But in park!

The problem I had was installing the new belt. Cracked a 15 mil socket on the spring tensioner. I had a 2' pipe on the socket wrench to reduce the amount of force required to release the belt Came to the stop and pushed just a bit to hard & cracked the socket.

Greg,

Further to our conversation at the meeting. I use the Lilse Air Hammer Fan clutch wrench "set" with the 36mm adapter(included) regularly for those. Cost me $270 from my snap-on dealer. Part number LIL43300.
For the Range Rover classic's I had to add the 32mm adapter to my kit.

I saw the same set at KMS tools for $260, almost a year ago though.

Later,
Don
