hey guys im starting on my 64 88'', i need to replace/ upgrade the solex carb, i found a place called wise owl parts in alberta that offers an adapter plate to put a newer weber carb on, does anyone know if there is another carb that will fit? and has anyone else delt with wise owl? They also sell the weber as a brand new item.

The Webers are not bad, except they ice up badly in cooler temps. So if you're gonna use it in the spring, fall and winter, or on cool wet mornings you'll have to build some sort of doghouse to get exhaust warmth up to the carb.

I am of the opinion that the Solex is about the best carb that you could have. It well may be beyond serviceable condition but I would let an expert judge that before you spend money on "upgrading".

I have a weber and have had no issues with it...
I have two Rochesters but have yet to use them... I have heard though that the rochesters are hard on the engine because the wash the piston walls with gasoline leading to premature wear...

I converted to a Webber on my 1967 11a and it always performed well with no issues.
Dave pointed out their weak spot with icing up in the Dead of Winter and fuel evaporation in the height of Summer.

I found this easy avoidable by building a simple metal heat sheild which sheilded from the manifold heat in the summer which I then removed in the winter months which allowed for a quick heat-up (from the manifold).

I mounted my Webber using a adapter plate from Wise Owl and it basically allowed the webber to fit to the new stud mounts while turning the carb 45degs for cable connection. It all worked well for me!

I have a Weber on my 109. Good carb but can be a little temperamental if you get crud in the jet.

Do be aware that through RoverTech in N.Van we ordered up a total of 3 brand new Webers and they were all crap and ended up rebuilding my original Weber.

We could not get the "new" ones to the correct mixutre no matter what we tried.

Just make sure that however you purchase it from will take it back if there are problems.

....and get a shutoff solenoid for it as they do tend to run on sometimes and the solenoid solves this. You can order one with the Carb.

thanx for the info guys, unfortuatly not all the pieces are left on the original solex, and the shaft is worn, when my dad used to own this rover he said he always had problems with the carb running way lean and turning the ex manifold cherry red. After reading the links i think i might try the rochester. But we'll see

A new genuine Zenith did the trick for me as my rebuild was carb-less when I got it. Some hate them though.
