Does anyone know how to get short term auto insurance in the UK if you don't have a UK drivers licence?

I would of thought an Insurance company in the UK would provide you with a short term UK insurance. (even with a BC licence)
If you have a LR magazine from the UK it will be full of insurance companies ads from within the UK, give them a call and see what they can do.
They dont have a "ICBC" style goverment insurance in the UK, all car insurance is out for private tender which leads to lots of competion and all are out to get your Pound.(or your 2.2 dollars).
Let us know what you find out.
cheers,
Andy

I've tried every short term company I can find and they will not insure Aus, US, Canadian licences. I can buy, register, and drive here in UK. I can get 12 months of insurance but just can't seem to find anyone that will do the short term coverage.

These guys will insure anybody with one years license from any country on anything with wheels. $40 for a single day, $140 for a week.
Tip: when giving your UK post code, choose the address of a friend who lives in a rural area (If you get stuck, let me know and I'll see if my parents would be willing to let you use their address for a few days) as rates for urban areas are extortionate.
Good luck!

I've tried tempcover.com and they say:
Eligibility
Policyholder & additional drivers
* You have a current full drivers licence (for a minimum of 1 year)
(Australian or USA/Canadian licences are unacceptable)
Thanks for trying though ;)

I have tried to get UK insurance and have had no luck. However, getting it in Switzerland is very easy. Don't know what your plans are but each time I have bought a Land Rover in Switzerland I have just gone down to the local Motor Vehicle branch and recieved both plates and insurance (green card) for a month for less than $200.
Amazingly simple compared to the rest of Europe.
If you find a company please let us all know.
Good luck.
