1991 Range Rover metal noises... HELP!
Hi there - Well, am having tons of fun driving in the snow.. kind of neat using my 4x4 in the snows of Victoria and Salt Spring!
All going well but..... Started hearing 'metal rubbing against metal' in the front left part of the engine... why? checked the tires, hubs etc... is it the brakes? also noticed on that hubcap there has been a sooty black spot around the centre of the cap... are these two related? please help!
This horrible squeaking noise only sounds when I am going forward in Drive and not in Reverse.. also in my 4x4 the noise is present..
Vehicle is still in Salt Spring... is there anyone out there that could help me out? I've only had my car for a year and no problems... and also I just had a tune up two weeks ago...
Looking forward to anyone's help.
Cheers, Lee

Noises...
Hi Lee,
Good to hear your having fun in the snow with the classic!
The most obvious thing is your brake pads, have you checked them for thickness. best to pull them out and inspect them closely.
Another common thing on the Classic is to get a stone/gravel stuck in between the backside of the rotor and the metal stone guard. This happens so often that a lot of owners who off-road a lot will remove these stone guards all together. Take the wheel off, get right in there with a flash light and using a screwdriver you will be able to prise out any stuck objects.
Good luck, let us know if you find anything,
cheers,
Andy

Yes, and the black sooty stuff around the center cap is (I believe) from the temperature differential between the air outside and air inside you center hub. It starts cool, but after some highway miles, the wheel bearings have heated the air inside the center cap's cavity up, and that in turn means a difference in pressure. The black dust is, I believe, simply crap that has been moved out from the center cap's cavity by the increased pressure behind the cap.
It could be worse, I've seen a few Range Rovers running around sans caps... including my dad's!

Andy's advice is right on. If you've been bashing through snow drifts you might even have just bent the backing stone guard slightly causing it to contact the brake rotor. Before spending any money at the garage you should consider jacking up the front of the truck and hand spinning the wheel to try and pinpoint the sound. I once broke one of the tabs that hold this guard in place and it would only make a squeeking noise when I was going fast enough to let the wind speed blow it into contact with the brake rotor, very annoying!

expensive little rock ...
Hi Lee,
Glad you found out what the noise was, yes those irritating little stones get caught in the inside of the stone guard all the time. I get one pretty much every time I go off-roading. Sometimes if you catch it early (as soon as your hear the noise), that reversing a few yards will sometimes throw out the stone before it falls in too deep.
Once you know where to look it is only a few minutes to flick out the stone with a screw driver. I guess your mechanic has a minium 1hr charge of $85 as it would of only taken him 10 mins to locate and remove the stone.
It will be great to see you at founders Day, there is normally half a dozen RR Classics at the show, with an average of 40 - 50 Landrovers in total.
On Saturday morning there will be a small off-road course set up next to the Founders Day site which will be a good chance to pick up some off road tips and have some fun.
We will be having a local Snow run on the following Sunday if you are staying on the Mainland overnight.
Happy New Year,
Andy :D
