we are in a little beach town on the Yucatan coast called Progresso. We are staying in a house on the beach with family for the week then we are off to Belize. After a rough start the rover has only just given up a muffler here at the 7600km mark hope that is all but I am sure it wont be. Will will update the website in a day or two with all the Mexico driving tales it is quite scary driving. The military has left us alone 6 out of 7 checkpoints and just a brief search of the truck at one. They are all freaked out that I am on the other side as the driver. Cheers from Mexico

Glad it's going well!
Mexico driving is something all right... was down there last year in a rental car, and one of those HUGE speed bumps on the highway kinda caught us by surprize....don't think that little toyota was designed to catch that much air...
after that we kinda figgered out what " reductor de velocidad" meant...
have fun man.
cheers

Broken Down

What luck that we made it to Belize after a long 950km just trying to keep her in gear the transfer case gave up the ghost in Crooked tree. This is by far the best place to break down on the trip. There is a Land Rover of some disrepair in every third house. I have found a man just 13 miles from us that must have thirty trucks in his yard. No gear boxes but he had a transmission for a v-8 with a new gear box on it so he is swaping the whole thing for $600. Not a bad deal I would guess i came very close to having a 300 tdi installed but it was just out of budget. I will let you know how it turns out
We have made it to Guatemala

The truck had some problems on our way to Belize the transfer case came apart. I had it repaired and it worked fantastic for about 5 days then the same thing happened when we were coming out of Tikal Guatemala. So we limped back to Belize for the second time this trip our only option was to order in a new transfer case for the V-8. I then found someone who would swap out the gas engine for a new 300 tdi. We have all the updates on
www.adventurefamily.ca. We have continued our trip and are in Antigua and I have to look at Defenders all day long while I take busses and TUK TUKs. There seems to be alot of Land Rovers here I cant wait to get back to my truck in Belize. Any help and advice for me when I get back to driving the new diesel would be great. Thanks

sounds like you are having lots o fun.
I did this trip about ten years ago to costa rica and back i believe using the same route you are doing in a Suzuki Samurai.
I took the wrong road out to Antigua and ended up driving for two days through the mountain gravel roads instead of the paved highway that would have taken just a few hours.
keep having fun.
