I hate to ask this as I know it's been covered before, but how do you attach photos to a post? I used the search function but couldn't find anything on it.

Thank you

Two things you need... 1. a place online where you can put photos, and 2. the web address of the actual photo. The first there are many of online for free. Photobucket, Flickr, Panoramio, EveryTrail, Google are just a few that come to mind. The second, if you're using Photobucket, for example, is really simple... by hovering over any photo you see some options show up below it. The final option on the list is the IMG option. this copies the actual photos address, along with the required "" commands to your local computer's clipboard, and then you just past it in here, like this...

http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/phot ... 870390.jpg

Other free photo hosting services offer various ways to access the actual image on their site. You just have to figure out which method allows you to get the link that ends with .jpg, and then if they don't offer an IMG option, you can cut and paste in the link and type at%20the%20beginning%20and at the end of your image.

If you're storing your photos somewhere that doesn't provide the IMG option that Imagebucket provides, then you simply right click on your photo and select the option of "Show image in New Window" or similar, this depends on what browser you're using. Unfortunately Windows Explorer doesn't allow this option, so you may have to download something like Firefox to be able to right click and access the actual photo URL. Hint: the actual photo URL address is a long web address that ends with .jpg. Once you have the .jpg address, you then paste it in your post, adding [img]to%20the%20front%20of%20the%20address%20and[/img] to the end of the address.

Try posting a couple to this thread until you know you have it working...

As far as posting videos goes, start by uploading them to youtube. Then, there is a button to "embed" the video just below your video in youtube. Copy that link and paste it into a post here and you should be able to view the youtube video on this forum.

cheers, Dave

just trying...

Remove the question mark and the code after it. If the photo doesn't then appear, very likely you have a restricted URL, and not a public web URL. Seeing the link is from dropbox, it's very likely restricted to your eyes only, or whomever owns the dropbox account.

As of June 2012, the forum software now supports direct posting of attachments. That way you can post a photo without actually having it on a photo website somewhere first. Just attach it to your posting directly from your computer.

Posting Photos & Videos from Flickr

I couldn't get my pictures on Flickr to show on this site, but I've figured it out now:

- click on a photo in Flickr
- on the bottom right you'll see an stylized arrow pointing right
- click on the aforementioned right-pointing arrow
- a box called "Share" appears
- click on the word "BBCode" (Bulletin Board Code)
- choose the size of image you want in the drop-down box
- from the text field beneath the drop-down box, copy the code that's in there
- paste this into a new posting on the Roverlanders site (don't add any other code)

You will see a number of "clauses" starting with "[url=https..." and ending with "[/url]". The last couple of these are the photo name and member name. These can be removed.

Good morning, All,

I'm a newbie here and this is my first post, although unintentional! I've been trying to contribute to a technical thread and attach a file but keep getting the message that *.pdf files and *.doc files cannot be uploaded. Am I doing something wrong and can they, in fact, be uploaded? If they are not allowed is there another format that I can convert one of them into to upload?

Dave,
I appreciate your attempt to help me, thank you, but I don't appear able to convert a *.pdf or a *.doc file into a *.jpeg format. More advice, please! Thanks.

You would have to use a photo viewer on your computer with an export option. On the Mac I use Preview, or Photoshop. not sure what the equivalent is on PC, but usually whatever program you use to view the PDF on your computer is a good starting point.

Here is a simple free tool to resize and save a copy of your photo's so you can upload them to this forum.

Thanks.
I only have an IPad at my disposal at present on which you cannot reduce the file size of a pic to suit our site’s max file size without a photo editing program.
I might try this app, but what is our site’s maximum file size? And is that size for a single pic or more?
The answers may seem obvious for most of you, but never had a problem when I had a real computer, until the missus declared that she must have an IPad.
Eric.

Just testing settings to get the maximum quality vs image size when attaching photos directly to a post. Maximum file size for an attachment photo to this forum is 256kb.

This image is saved as a jpeg at 1024 pixels on the long edge.
It came out to 221kb and the quality looks fine to me although it may be a bit large

So, what is the answer? How do I upload photos to the forum? I am not prepared to upload to one of the "free" photo web sites because it seems that they are rapidly becoming not free, and access to photos is restricted. Hence, posts and threads that rely upon a lot of photos become worthless, as has happened on other LR fora that I visit.

See #10 above, but it has to be a jpg/jpeg image. It cannot be a doc or PDF. I think a .png will work too but I haven’t tried. Optimum size for the long dimension is 1024 but since many have wide screens nowadays it doesn’t make much of a difference except to keep within the overall max size the forum allows
