Discovery stub axle seals

#1 Post by chilliwack » Mon Sep 01, 2008 11:33 am

My Right front stub axle on 96 discovery is leaking from the swivel hub into the wheel bearings.

I pulled the front hub, swivel ball ect all apart.

I want to change the stub axle seal and bearing.

The manual says chisel out the thrust ring then pull the bearing and seal with special tools.

I don't have a thrust ring or the special tools. The bearing and seal I have.

Has anybody changed this and how did they go about it?

Also found the preload on the swivel ball pins was just about zero which may account for the vague steering.

On the plus side, the pins and bearings looks good.

Thanks for the help,
Roger

This is a GOOD thing. IMO, don't worry about trying to fix it....
