Help - dead disco

#1 Post by chilliwack » Tue Jun 03, 2008 8:37 pm

Drove my 96 Disco I to my carpool place this morning.
I have a check engine light on Code P0125 Coolant temp sensor.

Its been on for a while, the part is coming.

Got back from work and when I unlocked the door with the key (I don't have a fob) only the drivers door unlocked.('')
Shocked

Got in, turned it on, usual idiot lights, couple of relays behind the dash clicked, no crank. %$*&&!!!

Got in and out, checked battery terminals, fiddled with door lock. Managed to cause the horn to come on and stay on. Had to disconnect the battery to stop it.('')
Embarassed

Disconnected battery, let it sit for 10 minutes or so.....

With all the fiddling, it would no crank, but not catching or even trying.

At this point I noticed that the little red alarm light on the dash was staying on solid.

At this point I had it towed home.

I'm going back out to play some more.

My initial suspects are the microswitch in the door or the infamous spider in the central console.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Roger

Okay, went and had another look

Approach vehicle - little red light on solid

Unlock door with key - only drivers door unlocks - little red light stays on

Open door - interior light comes on

Key in - position I - usual idiot lights go on, radio and shifter lights go on, little red light still on

Position II some relays click, shifter and radio lights dim. No crank. Little red light still on

Remove key, exit vehicle, lock vehicle - only drivers door locks

Walk away from vehicle in disgust cloud - little red light still on (not flashing)

Any help would be appreciated

Roger

im a noob so this might not be much help, but i HAVE been reading a TON...

on another board someone had a similiar problem, it turned out to be a low battery.. even though he had headlights n all, the battery wasnt giving enough juice to the alarm system to disable, and thus it wont start...

other option is a wiring issue yeah

That was my first thought too, but when it did decide to crank after fiddling the lock, hood ect. I got a really strong crank, but on indication of spark.

It's pissing rain here and I can't get it inside right now. I'm going to start by checking the switch in the door lock. Failing any other good ideas, I'm probably going to go after the spider.

Thanks, Roger

I have a 96 and when my battery goes dead because of the stupid head light relay my alarm goes of also and only unlocks from the driver side. the problem you may be having IS with the alarm system not deactivating and has shut the ignition down. Call Alister at hesp auto he nows Disco like the back of his hand and Always gives free advise.

Cheers

Got home from work and tried the key in the Disco. Voila, unlocks properly and the light goes out. Climb in and it fires up right away.

Chortle, Chortle.... love these self healing Landrovers

Hmmm . . . what's that little voice (electric gremlins like to come back at the worst time  )

After pulling off the door interior without breaking too many of those little tab things I found the plug into the actuator had one pin backed out. Just in the right position to make intermittent contact.

Re-insert pin, nice and tight .. good.

A most inpressive connector all gasketed and water tight seals on pins. Looks like gold plated pins no less.

Grab small nasty electric gremlin firmly by the neck and punt him off into the weeds.

Job done.

Thanks all for the suggestions

Roger
