So I bought a 1983 Series III Santana, and Lola is her name

Hi,
I recently purchased a 1983 88" Santana, 4 speed with santana overdrive, and it is a diesel. I am pretty happy as I have moved up from the Toyota Landcruiser BJ60 I had during the Summer.
I just wanted to make myself known and say hello.
This is Lola and my first time meeting her in Sparwood B.C.

This is what she looks like from the front all clean:

and 3/4 view:

and her dash:

Now I still have to get her, even though she was right in front of me. We ended up in a severe snow storm in Sparwood B.C. all the way back to Cranbrook B.C., and I decided not to take her. It was a good thing I did not take her, as the weather was so severe vehicles were everywhere. Lola also did not have good snow tires, nor did I bring chains.
Lola is back in Med Hat AB, and I am deciding if I want to fly down and drive her back, or ship her via rail... The bright side is she gets to spend some time with her owner until she comes to me :)
Driving conditions:

Well, let me know what you think.
Nice rig

How were you able to get your hands on a Santana? They say they are what Rovers would be if they were still making the Series series :?
Living in Cranbrook I can vouch for the snow storm. It always amazes me that even in those conditions, there is always idiots who insist on driving 100km+ and endanger everyone. If you can get it as far as Cranny again, it can keep my ser1 company until you can get it.
We are not lucky enough here to have the big green Terex Titan, but we do have a regional airport.

gudjeon I lucked out on LandRoverExchange.com, and the owner is a really cool guy! We chatted for a month through emails, before deciding on when the best timing was to meet.
It was Oct 29 that the storm hit. Lola was frozen solid when she got there from being on a trailer behind the towing vehicle. The ice was not coming off, and her throttle cable was stuck... but eventually she came to life, and I got to test drive her :) Those engine heaters make a heck of a difference!
I was dissapointed to not be able to drive her back, but I think that it was the safer decision.
Thanks for the invite, and I'll keep it in mind :D

When I click on the link, it is asking for a name and password. Is the image publicly accessible. If so, when using the img and /img bracketed command, you probably need the actual address of the jpg, not the address of a page containing the jpg. So, when you view the image, right click on it and select the option of "view image in new window" (or something to that effect, depending on your browser & operating system). This will give you the precise image address.

Nice looking rovers!
I am so eager to get Lola here... damn weather!
When I get her here I will be taking her for a trip to some little known hotsprings out in the wilderness... also a great off road/logging road trip ;)
Anyone interested?

Winter accessible is a toss up... but it would be a fun trip. It could be a day trip, or a fun weekend expedition!

In the kootenays? or at the coast? I'm in Vernon, so if its in the interior, let me know and we may accompany.

Coast-ish... I was thinking of St. Agnes Wells hotsprings near Skookumchuck. Nice place, and it is on private property open to the public. The Trethewey family owns the property and the rights to 160 acres and the hotsprings... it is beautiful... and not very well known to the public, unless you are a die-hard 4x4'er or a camper... very nice for people that love the outdoors, and a good trip along a 50km logging/gravel road along the Lillooet river... very nice place to visit with friends and family... too far away for idiots looking to party and trash the place.
If you are interested, take a gander at my blog (look at my profile) and look on the right hand side for the link to john harvey photos.
Thanks,
Shane

Yes, we've stopped by there a number of times. I mostly agree, although, don't go in late May - June as its full of grad partiers and not such a nice place to be. Have you been to Sloquet Hotsprings, about 35 KM south on the same road? There is a turnoff onto a spur that goes for about 9 KM westward to the springs. Quite remote and primitive, but often no people at all.
For some reason I thought you were from the interior, guess it was you were driveing home through the kootenays. I'm gonna try and explore some of the lesser known hotsprings in the west kootenays when I get a chance.
Great looking truck, by the way. Just gotta stop getting all those trailer shots. You'll give her a complex — she'll think shes becoming a trailer queen. :P :P

Hey Dave,
Sloquet is a nice place, but they've turned it into a cheesy looking provincial park. The campsites are no larger than most mid sized sedans, and they've taken away something I find with it looking so crammed. They now have a ranger there with a sat phone.
St. Agnes is nice, but I wish people would still remember that it is private property and respect the family. Robin does his rounds and keeps an eye on people, even though he doesn't like the spotlight.
If you want lesser known hot springs, when I was out around Kaslo the Summer before last, I went to Ainsworth. Ainsworth is more of a commercial resort/spa, but a damn nice cruise along kootenay lake. I was told of a lesser known hotspring you need to 4x4 into and the people who told me were the people in charge of the Nelson city campground.
The other option is to go to
BC geothermal maps and pick an area you think might be worth an expedition to :D
BTW, once I get Lola here, I will get some good shots of her up and posted :)
Here are some more teasers (the below pics are from Stuart):

and lastly, I lucked out and found the promotional booklet in Spanish for the 88" Santana:

Lola is on her way... she'll be here before the New Year!!! :D
Edit Lola made it to the train yard in Calgary... she makes her way out this coming Friday, and should arrive the following Friday the 29th of December :)
Edit My rover is here! Friday, Dec 22 was the arrival date, but it was too late to get her. Tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec 27, is the eventful day :)

Yay! :D
After two months of having purchased the vehicle, I got to pickup my land rover yesterday. I drove her home, and that was a fun experience :) I was practicing my double-declutching last night while coming home, and really getting a hang of things. The next trick will be engaging the overdrive on her.
Now this is where the story get a little strange.
I was told to take the rover to Canadian Tire for a vehicle inspection because it is from out of province, and that is where I ran into some issues, not with the vehicle, but with Canadian Tire.
I was told that right now they could not pass the rover because they could not inspect the brakes, and on top of the $100 fee to inspect the vehicle, that I would be charged an extra $220 just for them to open up and inspect the brakes... something sounded not right to me.
I ended up wasting 3 hours of my time there because they really did not do anything. I was disappointed and not impressed. I am thinking of going to MCL to get the vehicle inspection done. On the plus side, Canadian Tire did not charge me anything.

Congrat's on your new Rover. I don't know what gearbox that Santana has in it but I doubt that you have to double clutch to get a good shift. I would think it is a fully synchromesh box.
I also have my doubts that MCL is the right place to take an old Series Rover for a Provincial inspection. If you thought Canadian Tire was expensive....

As for Canadian Tire wanting to charge for the brake inspection they are likely just wanting to get their time paid for. There is much more effort involved in checking the condition of the brake components of a drum brake system than there is with disk brakes. In a worse case scenario it will also require a complete brake adjust to get you back on the road. Better that they warn you ahead of time about the costs than after the fact.

Try Dundarave motors. Mr. Forbes Mason.

John - Thank you :)
Yah, I thought that the fee for the vehicle inspection covered everything for the inspection part. If they need to take the brakes apart for the inspection, then isn't that part of the same job?
I phoned another Canadian Tire to double check, and the manager over there said that "the only way it would cost extra, is if the brakes are free floating".
I'll keep my ears open regarding MCL as well... a friend is the service supervsor over there ;)
JD - Thank you, and I'll check in with Forbes... and Ian... my cousin used to work there.
