How can you tell if an axle is a salisbury or not? Front or rear? And are they really as strong as a Dana 60?

The rover axle has a removable carrier housing, whereas the Salsbury has an inspection cover plate.

It is my impression that the Salsbury is or is very similar to a Dana 60.

On the back of the pumkin (center big bit ) and I believe salsbury are only on the back of land rovers only not the front.

The Salisbury is in fact a Dana 60, made by Dana for Land Rover.

There are few little differences. The Rover version uses a different R&P than normal 60s. The ring mounting holes are a slightly different diameter and the pinion bearings are different. The rover version uses a 4 pinion center whereas most 60s use a 2 pinion. Anywho, the center is as strong as any 60 out there if not stronger.

Now the down side.... They use the regular Rover 24 spline (1.24") halfshafts which are a lot weaker than the center. Regular Dana 60s use 30 spline (1.31") shafts and HD ones use 35 spline (1.5") shafts. Changing to 30 spline is fairly stright forward. 35 spline is possible, but more involved and expensive.

But I still don't know what I'm looking for on the outside of the axle that would identify my rear or front axle as a Salisbury. Having an MOD 110 I've been reliably informed that my rear will be a Salisbury but my front won't... but I'ld like to be able to see for myself. Can't seem to find enough documentation to identify them.

looked for an inspection plate on my rear axle. ?? Couldn't see one. There is a big bolt on cover .... similar to my old Dodge, but there is no "plate" on top of that as such.

So what am I looking for on the outside of the axle? What shapes, bolts, sizes?

the d90 usually has no rear unboltable cover on its axle, the salsbury axle does.

If you have a rear bolt on cover you have a salsbury
