New motor.

OK so my smoky 2.5 diesel finally blew. I don't think I'm supposed to have oil in my coolant and diesel in my oil.
So I picked up a 2.5 petrol, And I am going to give it a try putting it in myself.
I'm going to need:
A: an engine lift.
B: advice.
Has anyone done a diesel to petrol swap? Any kind of help would be appreciated.
Thanks. Glenn

Hi Glenn,
I have an engine hoist you can use. I also have lots of advice, some of it useful

Hi Glen
If you have no use for the air filter , I would be more than happy
to take it.

I have an extra 2 barrel carb and manifold for 2.5 if you or anyone else wants it.
My advice, for what its worth -- take off the front wings and breakfast to pull the engine. Although this will add about 2 hours to each end of the process, and I wouldn't bother with a normal engine re & re of exactly the same type of engine, it's definitely worth it on an engine conversion, as there are lots of little things to switch out and fiddle with and its a great deal easier to make the changes when you don't have to be reaching over the fenders.

diesel to petrol

I have the most concerns about re-wiring the electrics. Especially the distributor vs the diesel pump solenoid.
Is anyone running the electronic distributor system? is it worth the change?
Also do I need to change the fuel pumps? Is the diesel fuel filter ok or should I swap it out with the petrol style one? I will obviously change the filter element. (I do know I have to change the fuel!!)
Does the 2.5 petrol have a fuel line return? or is that controled at the float bowl?
Thanks in advance. I hope I can get it done before the rain sets in, I want out on more trips!!

Wiring should be pretty straight forward. Run the wire that went to the shut off solenoid to the coil. I think that most people running electronic ignition systems are happy with them but it is always good to be able to switch back if you are in the bush and have a component failure in the system. I think some systems allow this easier than others.
Fuel pump will not change, not sure about the filter. Maybe a petrol filter is finer than a diesel one, not sure. No fuel return required.

Are you sure its not just a head gasket?
Diesel vs Petrol

I have considered the posibility of it just being a head gasket. I had the compression checked when I bought it because it was burning oil, and blowing smoke. It checked out fine at the time. Im still gonna pull the head and check before I pull the motor. I might just replace it and give it a try.
I like the idea of a 2.5 petrol due to the fact they are quieter and a little faster than the diesel. I don't commute so economy isn't a huge concern right now. I doubt my LT77 could handle a V8. I can't afford a TDI yet
The petrol swap is not going to be as easy as I hoped however as I'm going to need a few parts. I'll post a list of requests later. But a radiator and electric fuel pump at least
Anyone had a radiator re-cored or repaired or it this a waste of time?

Re-coring a metal tanked rad is quite common. Get a quote first to know how much you will be into if for as a good job may not be as cheap as you expect.

I have had a number of rads recored and its a cheaper option and as good as new, I have mine done at Dolfin rads in Abbotsford

Yes, Recoring is probably the best option.
As John said get a quote first.
I recommend Diamond Radiator in Vancouver.

Hi Glen,
I still have Bill's 2.5D and all the bits up at Roverworks.....might save you a lot of money in the long run especially if you are planning to go TDI.
