Layshaft binding

I'm looking for an answer so I've posted this elsewhere too. I appologize if you find it on the web in more than one place.

I am using parts from an "A", "B" & "D" gearbox. Judging by part numbers, all the parts I'm using should be compatable but of course I'm having trouble. I can't seem to get the bellhousing bolted to the gearbox casing without the layshaft jambing so tight that nothing will move. I ordered the shortest available of the layshaft distance piece's but it still seems to jam. What am I missing?

Greg.

Could it be that....With out you having the selector shafts installed yet, 1st gear is sliding back and engaging AND the reverse idler is sliding back and engaging. With both these conditions existing simultaneously the gear box will lock-up giving the appearance of a seized shaft.

Check your 1st gear-layshaft it correct and on the right way round. There are some very critical differences between the suffix(s).

Gears are all on the right way and mesh nicely, The shafts all turn properly and change gear. The gears at the back are not bound. The two casings come within about a 1/16th of an inch or less but if made to go any closer, the layshaft binds. I think it is bottoming in the back bearing.
