I’m pretty new to the welding/fabrication side of things, where does one go to get steel for projects?

Is there anywhere to wander about and look at what’s available? I can’t visualize what’s out there for steel vs what I can remember at the lumber yard for carpentry projects.

How’s it sold? Standard lengths? Price per cut? Etc?

I have a few things I’d like to build such as sliders, bumper, canoe rack for my trailer, and a few bodywork jobs I need material for as well.

I’m located in Hope, so the further east the better.

Metalsupermarket stores are great for the hobbyist.

Amix Steel on Industrial Way in Chilliwack (just off Hwy 1) is where some of my buddies go get their steel. They take walk-in business.

good deals can be found at ABC recycling out of the surrey yard, a mix of surplus, off cuts, blems, new and various "things". a lot sold at scrap prices.
selection can be hit or miss, but a great place to just wander through and stock up on random stuff to start building with.

i usually go there first with an idea then see what I can find to build it with, generally cheaper that Metal supermarkets for new, but limited stock.

lots of blemished aluminum and stainless sheet material as well.
