From a Disco forum on I am on, it had a head gasket problem after being run to the top of the temp gauge at least once.

I cannot figure out how a running engine could do that

Ouch! I think the owner likely kept driving it and wondered why it was making a strange noise. 🤔🤗

Never seen that, but it doesn't surprise me any.

Twice now, I've needed to intervene at the roadside to stricken motorists. Both times, huge plume of steam out of the radiator, engine still running. One of those times the air conditioning was also at full blast while he was on his cellphone to AMA. New driver.

Turn the engine off! "What do you mean?" He says. It was a long back and forth to get that far.

A situation like this, or ignoring gauges/check engine light could lead to massive damage like that. Could also catch fire too, I suppose.
