Well gang, I looked at a 1973 Land Rover Series 3 88” to buy. It is in the process of being restored. It’s a bit out of my price range but someone here should buy it.
2.25l gas engine. Looks to be rebuilt. Transmission is spotless. New Galvanized frame. New springs, new Old Man Emu shocks, body is very straight. Stainless steel exhaust, new deluxe front seats. Jump seats in back look in great shape, new gas tank, Looks to have most parts for it. A couple of things I’m not sure about. The wiring harness is not correct.
Looks to have new Rocky Mountain Door tops.
Anyhow I think the owner is asking around $13000.00.
It does need to be finished but really not much left to do. If your interested send me a private massage and I can give the phone number and more photos
Geoff

FYI - It has a Series 2a bulkhead, windshield and hood (bonnet), with series 3 front fenders and breakfast. They look like they are from 73 (indicators on the side), but not the rest of the truck. Are you sure it is a 1973?

I’d be more inclined to say the year and model is off. More likely it is a late 2a than someone having swapped the late 2a bulkhead, windshield, hinges, hood and rad support/grille onto a Series 3. The wings and markers are the same on a late 2a or 3.

I don’t see the rivets on the tub side either.

Late 2A is my guess, 2a hints (in addition to those already noted) are the turn signal switch, shift knob, clutch slave cylinder location... if they are calling it a 1973 series 3 it makes me wonder if it is a VIN-swapped rover? Or maybe they just don't have the info correct on the paperwork, wouldn't be the first time that happens with the non-modern standard VINs on rovers.

Owner told me it is registered as a 1973. I assume it should be a series 3. It still has lots of new parts. Still a great find
Just my thoughts

I agree, a very good looking Rover that someone has spent a lot of time bringing back to life :occasion5:

VIN plates are easy to change and the staff (for lack of a better term) at ICBC wouldn't know the difference anyhow.
It is a good looking Rover with lots of new bits for sure, but $13k for a "bitsa" might be a wee bit steep.

Any ideas on what a decent price would be for a vehicle in this condition?

While it has had a lot of work done, a bunch of new parts, there is still a lot left to get it finished, with paint being a major one (and not a cheap one, even spraying it yourself).

I may be off, but my thoughts are $13k is pretty optimistic with somewhere between $5-8k as more realistic, especially right now. Economic conditions aren’t great, likely to get worse and old Land Rovers are not a necessity so likely to drop in actual market value if few people are buying. Doesn’t stop people from trying, but doesn’t mean they are actually selling at the advertised prices.

Old Land Rovers are said to be increasing in value, but the Canadian market is less than the US market, and a certain amount of any price increase is driven by speculative buyers and fools paying too much. People who really know Series Rovers know how much work and cost most need and try to pay according to this.

I took a look at the red one on the weekend. It's nice but there's a lot of rust in the frame. That kind of scared me because I'm not too keen on stripping one down to the frame and either replacing it or having it repaired.

Be prepared to either put the work in to fix the issues, or prepare to pay more for one someone else has done the work on. A frame swap or repairs are a big job (depending on how extensive the repairs are), but not insurmountable.

If the red truck needs frame work or replacement, $10k is optimistic.

The red one is the same one, I'm sure, that was on FB marketplace about a month or so ago in Langley. Seems like either it was too much or there was an unforeseen issue (frame?). Not sure if anyone looked at it then....

Yeah, that's the same rover that was advertised on FB about a month ago. It was up in the Cariboo (family owned for 25 years) and sold for about $8,000 and has been posted for sale again at a higher price in a different location by a different seller.
