Whitworth Wrenches

Any easy way to spot an old British Wrench when going thru a box or assorted wrenches at Flea Markets, Garage Sales, Pawn Shops? Is there a tell-tale stamp or something to speed up the process?

Often there will be a W stamped by the size

Found an old wrench today that says 7/16 but is more like a 5/8.......there is an uppercase "B" inside a shield on the handle

Yes, that is whitworth. 7/16" refers to the thread size of the bolt.

The B likely stands for BSF - British Standard Fine.

I suppose actual Whitworth wrenches would be nice to have, but in my 25 years of owning my 2A I've done almost every job there is to do using SAE and metric.

I could not get the hubs and backing plates off of the axle case of my S2 without a whitworth spanner.

Mind you on the other axle I drilled and split the nuts with a chisel so... 🤷🏻‍♂️

From memory, I think I needed to "tap" (aka pound) a metric socket on those.
