October Whipsaw/Jim McEachern Memorial Run

October is our last clean up run of Whipsaw this year. It will be combined with a run through the Ashnola traverse in memory of our friend Jim McEachern. The plan is to meet in Keremeos on Friday afternoon and depart at 4:00 to run the Ashnola traverse in reverse. We will camp on Friday evening at one of the recreation sites along Ashnola Road, and complete this run on Saturday morning at Copper Creek, where we'll rejoin Highway 3.
On Saturday morning, we'll meet up with anyone that couldn't join us on Friday and go on to the Highway 3 Whipsaw entrance, a short distance away. We'll spend Saturday afternoon running Whipsaw to Wells Lake, where we'll set up camp and do some trail maintenance. As a thank you to those that come to the season's last clean up, the Rover-Landers will sponser a BBQ on Saturday evening at Wells. We'll finish Whipsaw with the run from Wells Lake to Coalmont on Sunday morning.
We expect it be a great run and look forward to seeing you there. If you plan to attend, please post up or contact me so we can get a head count and arrange the meeting at Copper Creek. For more info please contact me at:

This is going to be a great event. O'Doul myself and Mr. Rudd are going for sure. I urge anyone who's in for a fun challenge to come. Keep in mind this is high country, weather conditions could vary from hot to snow.

I'll be there! Maybe I can convince the "boy" to come out this time. He has nice small hands that we could use to turn those tools in tight places...lol.
Should be nice and muddy...make sure and bring your wellies...and we should wash our trucks after wards as we don't want to look like that D90 in the Ministry posters
Hopefully I can get my lights sorted out...have a new indicator stalk coming in that should solve the problem...but if not, nothing that a bit of duct tape won't solve.
Cheers,
Dave & "Stewie"

I'll be there. But beware, if I can't get the new clutch in on time, I'll be aboard a Jeep!

Jeeps are good too, I've got brake issues on my 110 and won't be able to deal with them before this run so I'll be taking my Mog...

Well..... Tallyho; I'm going to give it a go. My only experience of 4x4'ing is in England where I drove for 35minutes, played for an hour or two then hit the pub to round out the day... Not so in the colonys methinks. I've hiked and camped, canoe'd and camped and boated and camped in Canada so the camping bit is not worrying me. It's the pointy ground and my summary lack of experience/skill/courage/etc that is making me a tad nervous. Anyway; in for a penny..... I'll be there DV.[/img]

David,
It's great to hear you plan on joining us. Whipsaw has a few challenging spots but nothing you can't handle with a bit of help if needed. Going with a group like the Rover-Landers is the best way to increase your experience while eliminating the risk.
A couple of questions for planning purposes: Will you meet the group on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning? What model LR do you drive? How many people will be with you?
Thanks,
Pete

Hi Pete,
I'm in for this one, Ashnola and Whipsaw both, just me.
By the way Pete, David V. is our man with the lightweight "Hermoine". He was with us on the Port Douglas run remember.

Heyo, I'm going to try and make it to Keremeos for Friday afternoon, but it'll depend on how class goes. Also, I will not be getting the clutch in on time (or a new spring to replace the collapsed parabolic, more importantly), so I'll be the guy in the fire engine red Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon.
Oh, also, I've got a couple jerrys on the back of the 88 that I fill up before I go anywhere just because it's a gas pig... but how much gas will I be needing for this trip, if I fill 'er up in Keremeos, do I need to strap a jerry or two in the back of the Jeep?

Thanks Bill. After Dave PM'd me and mentioned the lightweight, I figured it out...

Hi all,
I thought I'd post additional detail from Dave Blair for the meeting locations that should be very helpful if you have a GPS unit:
Friday 4 PM Keremeos: 49.207024N -119.818076W, junction at centre of town.
Turn off the highway here: 49.204727N -119.880857W and follow Ashnola Road southwest for approximately 30 KM.
Friday night camp site at the Buckhorn Recreation site/campground on the Ashnola River: 49.146769N -120.160800W
For those that will be meeting up with us on Saturday, the Highway 3 Copper Creek turnoff: 49.188972N -120.561381W
Highway 3 Whipsaw turnoff: 49.368717N -120.576873W
Wells Lake: 49.370048N -120.887222W
Thanks Dave!

It looks like there may be several groups departing for Ashnola/Whipsaw from Vancouver: Friday noonish, Friday evening, and Saturday morning. If you're looking to get hooked up with one of the groups, post up...

For those equipped with two-way radios, we'll be using 146.460 on VHF and channel 4 on CB.
Sorry for the endless posts, just trying to get info out there as it leaks out of my brain...

Hi Pete,
I think I'll try for the first group. That is if I can get there in time from the North Shore.
When you say "noonish" is that 12 or 1?

Hi Pete,
I had a question from a member about the rendezvous time on Saturday morning at the Whipsaw turnoff? It may already have been posted but I seem to have missed it.
As far as Friday night goes I am heading straight for Buckhorn so don't expect me in Keremeos. Let me know if you need me to bring anything.

P.S. I'll be on VHF 146.460

I haven't a clue what Bill was talking about but he reminded me that someone was going to post GPS co-ordinates for the Friday and Saturday meet ups... Is that forthcoming? It came up at the last Rover Landers meeting last week. Dave Blair; was that you?
Where the 'ell is Buckhorn; Bill?

Hi David,
Scroll up a few posts and you'll see the coordinates. Buckhorn is the name of the Recreation Site on Friday night.

For any that hasn't gone back to the first post and read Pete's updates, you won't need to bring food for Saturday night. The Whipsaw Committee is kindly putting on a BBQ for all attendees on Saturday night.
Bring along your own beverages, though, please.
cheers, Dave

The plan:
Friday - Meet in Keremeos @ 4:00 where Dave Blair will lead the group to the Buckhorn Recreation campsite. If you want to do the Ashnola traverse but can't be there at 4:00, no big deal but you'll need to get to Buckhorn on your own.
Saturday - Complete the Ashnola traverse on Saturday morning and hopefully arrive at Copper Creek by ~ noon. Depart Copper Creek around 1:00 to head up Whipsaw. The Saturday meeting times are approximate because they depend on when the traverse is completed. It will be very helpfulf to know who is planning to meet the group at Copper Creek so we can be sure not to miss anyone that wants to travel with others.
If you can't be at Copper Creek by 1:00 on Saturday, no problem, let us know if you need someone to meet you or make your own way up Whipsaw, dinner isn't until dusk...
If you're doing the Ashnola traverse, it might be a good idea to fuel up in Princeton, on your way to Keremeos. This way, you're good for the tranverse and Whipsaw, and can refuel in Princeton after we exit Whipsaw.
With regard to convoys for the trip out of Vancouver, I'm not going to even attempt coordinating this. I'm only suggesting that if you're looking to hook up with others, you may want to post your intentions.
Clear as mud?
PS: Bill, is the member with the rendezvous question already on the dinner list or do I need to make an addition?
Regards,
Pete

Midday departure from Keremeos? There was never a midday departure from Keremeos only one at 4:00. Are you getting this confused with a midday departure from Vancouver on Friday?

Hey Guys so we are coming up for sure but we thought we would be hitting the same entrance as last time but it seems to be in reverse, I have the GPS but some additional instructions would be great. We can't make the 4 pm run but would probably be there at 7 is it worth trying to catch up or heading to the next meeting spot assuming that is at Well Lake?? Is that part of the run OK solo at dusk, even though I am usually on my own anyway, lol... Hope to see you all soon and lets hope the rain tapers off in Vancouver leaving us high and dry. ATB John

John,
We won't be anywhere near the Whipsaw on Friday night. If you are planning on coming up Friday, drive past Princeton to Keremeos. About 4 KM before Keremeos there is a junction with a road to the south, the Ashnola River Road. Turn here. You will shortly go over the bridge. Friday night's camp spot is easy to find... it is 30 KM down this road on the left hand side. We'll try and have a campfire going to ensure latecomers can spot us. This is a high-quality Forest Service Road with no challenges along the way, except perhaps a deer or two. This is the Buckhorn Recreation site.
On Saturday morning we'll start with the off-roading, first doing the Placer-Ashnola Traverse (in reverse) followed by the Whipsaw from Highway 3 south of Princeton.
Unless you want to wait until noonish Saturday to meet up with us at highway 3, you should try and make it to Buckhorn on Friday night.
cheers, Dave

Hi guys,
My Son, Leo, and I are planning on attending, depending on the success of some top secret vehicle upgrades.
Current plan is to leave Norh Vancouver between 1pm and 4pm and head straight to the Buckhorn Rec site, stopping for dinner along the way. If anyone would like to join us on the convoy, let me know.
We'll bring our own vegitarian dinner for Saturday.
See you there.
Thanks,
Don

Don,
Glad to hear you'll make it. There's no need to bring your own vegitarian meal, our 5 star chef has already anticipated this and has you covered.

Hi Guys,
There is a small group meeting at Tim Hortons, Whatcom road exit of h-way 1 at 11am Friday morning. We will be doing slower but steady rate (good for any series trucks!) with a 30min stop in Princeton to stretch legs and refuel.
Please post if you intend on meeting us there so we know to look out for you.

Well, not that anyone's keeping track, but it looks like I will be desperately trying to make the Keremeos 4pm departure...my other party bailed out, leaving me with the capacity to leave directly from UBC after class! Sadly, class ends at 12:50, so I'll be boogying along the highway to try and catch up to y'all en route.

Sadly, that's looking pretty unlikely. My Spanish midterm was bumped up from Wednesday to Monday, and realistically, I don't trust myself to get enough studying in while on the trail. So, I'm going to extremely lame and do the last minute bail-out. If there's any way I can make it up to those that planned all this, just lemme know... I feel terrible having to cancel knowing how much work goes into an event like this. Beer peace offering?
Hope you guys have fun, stay safe, and don't break parts.

Hi Ryan,
The meeting times and locations are in the postings. In any case, if you're coming on Saturday to Whipsaw only, the meeting point is the Copper Creek turn out off Highway 3 between noon and 1:00pm. The coordinates are posted if you've got a GPS and don't know where Copper Creek is.
