I want to pick up a VHF handheld, I see there is a Marine one that also does FRS. Is this thing gonna be adequate for 4x4 trips? I don't have my licence yet but hope to be getting it this fall/winter...

Haven't got what license yet? Ham? Or marine mobile? If you buy a marine VHF it won't adjust to any Ham 2 meter frequencies. If you buy a marine, you are only alowed to use it "marine" and you need a station license but I think they did away with the requirement for an operator license. (or have I got it the wrong way around?)
Check with your local Ham club for used handhelds. A lot of people want to change what they have and good deals can be had. Icom, Kenwood & Yaesu are good names for Ham. Icom is serviced in Richmond so not big down times and delivery issues for the rare case of warranty or repair.
