Which Winch?

#1 Post by DaveB » Tue Feb 06, 2007 4:55 pm

I'm starting to do the research on a winch for my 99 Discovery II. I just ordered the Rovertym Slimline Bumper and it fits winches from all major players.

I've always liked the Warn 8274, but it really doesn't fit well on the Disco without lots of cutting, and is a bit light duty for the GVW, at 8000 pounds.

I've heard good and bad about Mile Marker and T-Max, and been told that the Superwinch models are best only in hydraulic and not as good in electric. But, as anyone that reads web forums know, there's lots of opinions, and not all are accurate.

I'm leaning towards Warn, something around 9000 - 10000 pounds at this point but am open to being convinced otherwise.

What do you think is the best winch for the truck?

Dave

First off let me say that I'm not too keen on planetary gear winches in principle. However, I have both a Warn XD9000I and a XD9000 and they have both been great. The XD9000 in particular has really impressed me with it's power and cool running under load. I winched the hell out of it on the Vic weekend last year on the whipsaw snow run and it didn't complain or run the batts down. I have two red top optima batts in parallel and the stock 90/110 2.5na alt. The only real down side to the 8000 and 9000 that I've noticed so far is that they don't have the line speed to keep up with the truck when it starts to get some traction and moves under it's own power. For that the 8274 would be better.

So, would you suggest that an 8274 might work? I still see used ones around quite regularly, and they're fairly easy to service. It would just mean a bigger cutout of the grill, which is gonna end up getting trimmed anyway if I buy any of the intergated models.

I run an 8274 on the Series truck and love it. The speed, the power, did I mention the speed? That would be my first preference.

The Disco's GVW is 6064 lbs, and curb weight is 4574 lbs. I've heard the formula of 1.5 times GVW or 2 times curb weight, which would mean a winch of around 9000.

But I've also done some incredible pulls with my 8274, so maybe it is worth giving it some thought. Is the new 8274-50 significantly better than the previous models?

Any experience with Superwinch? Some guys seem to swear by them compared to Warn.

Winches

Wow Dave I am very impressed, The Rovertyme stuff is abolutely wonderful. I wish they made sliders for the P38.

I think there is only one solution for you now that you are going top drawer.

The WARN Winch 9500LB Dual Force with Onboard air!

I am a little confused, the Disco that you guys bought for Pam to pull the horse trailer seems to be getting a lot of jewelry.

Well, just about everything done on the blue truck, so I've gotta do some catchup on the Disco. Remember, she was urging me to buy a bush bar for it when we first got it? Well the time has come.

The dual force is a wee bit out of my league though. Was thinking of either the 8274 as discussed above, if I could find a rather newish one, or a Warn XD9000i or a Warn 9.5Ti thermo.
