I was curious about overdrives. I see some people refer to them as "fairy" overdrives... is that a type of overdrive, or just a nickname?
Are overdrives rare for certain rovers?

Fairey Overdrives are one of several types. Santana is another and the locally developed Roverdrive a third. I think Santana Overdrives are still being made for the Spanish companies' Rovers, but haven't heard of them selling new separately very often, although you do come acros them used ocassionally. Fairey has a North American refurbisher... Rovers Down South out of New Orleans, but I would recommend you look no further than the Roverdrive, developed in North Vancouver, and sold by Wise Owl / Rover Park Boys. A number of us in the club have these, and they seem to be holding up quite well, using a simple set up of a synchro ring from a series transmission combined with a planetary gear set from an automatic transmission. There's also nothing wrong with a well maintained Fairey Overdrive. Some of them shift extremely smooth compared with anything else I've tried, including my Roverdrive.
Some have suggested that higher gearing is the way to go rather than an overdrive, as it is stronger, however, with both my previous gas engine, and my newly installed diesel engine, I really like the wide selection of gears I have with the Roverdrive. It makes the truck much more drivable, and if I had opted for a high ratio gear set, I'd have missed out on the regular ratios that are certainly pleasant at certain speeds. Each to their own, I suppose.

Fairey O/D
I on the otherhand have a Fairey O/D that was rebuilt by Rovers Down South. It is currently installed in Summer, my Series IIa behind a Santana Transmission and the 2.5TD. It took a while to get it back as I sent it down just before the flooding in New Orleans which almost wiped out Rovers Down South.
The Fairey O/D is the most popular in the world.
The Santana transmission seems to have a slightly higher 4th than the Land Rover transmission. If I haven't already committed to the O/D I probably wouldn't have got it.
I think I stated before that once installed I destroyed the Speedo and got 31+ MPG...
