Smile of the day

#1 Post by ANDYD » Fri Jan 03, 2020 9:38 am

I have a Land Rover friend who’s addicted to drinking Girling Brake Fluid. When I brought the subject up with him he says he’s not addicted! In fact he claims he can stop any time he wants too....

Disclaimer; its a really bad idea to drink brake fluid, don't do it!

From the New York Times:

If you think PRE-COVID traffic was slow, consider that Jacob German was arrested on this day in New York city, in 1899 for driving at the blistering speed of 12 mph. The speed limit he blasted past the cop? Eight mph between 2 streets, and 4 mph around some corners. He is now unlucky enough to be remembered forever as “the first man arrested for running an automobile too fast".

What’s so fascinating about German’s arrest is how utterly strange it sounds today. His offending speed is what we’d consider an unbearably crawl. He was driving an electric car. And he was chased down for speeding by a policeman on bicycle.

Found and quoted from a recent Series 3 Santana for sale on Facebook Marketplace in the Delta area.

Yes, it leaks a bit of oil, it's a LAND ROVER! If it stops leaking, start worrying because it's probably empty.

Ha, funny :D

I guess the new signage will soon say;

- Select "off-road" mode button
- Monitor exterior cameras
- Select Classical music and seat warmers
- Set computer for Auto-Pilot
- Set wake-up alarm for arrival.

Re: Smile of the day - Aplomb

#15 Post by bsa_m21 » Tue Apr 20, 2021 8:34 am

This short narrative helps to explain correct meaning of one of the less used words of the English language - Aplomb ....... Enjoy.

An English Lordship was reading in the study when the butler approached and coughed discreetly.

"May I ask you a question, My Lord?"

"Certainly, go ahead, Carson." said His Lordship.

"I am doing the crossword in The Times and found a word the exact meaning of which I am not too certain."

"What word is that?" asked His Lordship.

"Aplomb," My Lord.

"Now that's a difficult one to explain. I would say it is self-assurance or complete composure."

"Thank you, My Lord, but I'm still a little confused about it."

"Let me give you an example to make it clearer. Do you remember a few months ago when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived to spend a weekend with us?"

"I remember the occasion very well, My Lord. It gave the staff and myself much pleasure to look after them."

"Also," continued the Earl of Grantham, "do you remember when Will plucked a rose for Kate in the rose garden?"

"I was present on that occasion, My Lord, ministering to their needs.

"While Will was plucking the rose, a thorn embedded itself in his thumb very deeply."

"I witnessed the incident, My Lord, and saw the Duchess herself remove the thorn and bandage his thumb with her own dainty handkerchief."

"That evening the hole the rose made in his thumb was very sore. Kate had to cut his venison for him, even though it was extremely tender."

"Yes, My Lord, I did see everything that transpired that evening."

"And do you remember the next morning while you were pouring coffee for Her Ladyship, Kate inquired of Will in a loud voice, 'Darling, does your prick still throb?'

And you, Carson, did not spill one drop of coffee ?

That, Carson, is complete composure, or aplomb."
