Over Drive choices

#1 Post by Turtle » Sun Jun 28, 2015 7:50 pm

I'm very excited to be a new member of the club. I've owned land rovers for most of my life, and all over the world, but sadly had to get out of it for about ten years. I still have much to learn.
So a question, the only over drive I have ever had, for a series 3, is fairy. I understand there are more options now. Any thoughts on what works best.
I'm looking forward to hearing your opinions.

I can recommend the RoverDrive (now called RoamerDrive) sold locally in BC

Ok, not to sound ungrateful for the reply, but why is it better?

I agree with Rambler, Roamerdrive (roverdrive) is a good choice. I installed one in my diesel defender 130 and it was great, the install was easy and the unit operated flawlessly. I believe that the roamerdrive is better designed, has a better lubrication system and from my experience much quieter than the Fairey. In addition, the roamerdrive is a modern design and is in current production locally here in BC.... last I heard Fairey is long out of business and parts are difficult to source. If you google fairey vs roverdrive you will find many threads on the topic.

Cheers, Rob

I've had both. The fairey is fine, but haven't been made in a long time. They are noisey, and have a small separate oil sump, so if you get a leak you can lose all the lube very quickly. Also if you drive a long distance they get warm, and the pressure vent sprays lube out so another way to lose all the lube. They also don't stand up to a lot of torque, so only useful in 3rd and 4th, and won't be happy with any engine power improvements.

Global Roamer, previously Roverdrive, has non of these drawbacks. Much tougher design, lube is shared with transfer case so less likely to run dry, you can hear it, but it is way quieter, made here, still made, still supported, and tough enough for any engine you're likely to throw at it. And you can go meet Ray and hear all about every little bit if you are into machining.

Those are some excellent arguments. Thank you for your input. I guess I know what to buy.
