alternator upgrade for S3 109?

#1 Post by Antur » Sat Mar 28, 2015 11:13 pm

Hey folks, what are people running for non-Lucas upgrades in older LRs? Series 3 109 with lots of lights. Would plans for a future two battery system change your mind?

Thanks,
Kyle

Go to your local auto recycler (wrecking yard) and ask "What is the most common Delco alternator"?

Buy one that is 75 to 120 amp. Remember, the higher amperage it is the more strain on your belts and other components on that belt system.

Adapt it to fit.
IMHO, can't go wrong and if it fails it is easy to replace, and cheap! Did I mention it was the cheap way to go?

Thanks Greg. The "adapt to fit" part is now the challenge. I recently saw a curved tensioning bracket that looked like the ticket for securing the top edge, but now i have to source it and a suitable pulley.

If you have the 45 amp one you can fit the later 65 amp one from the defenders. Not that expensive and handle most needs.

if it were me , I would go with a Delco 12si alternator ( early 80's chevy full size car ) and be done with it they are Cheap , Easy and Good and you dont have to pick only 2 choices
