3.5 dual stormberg carbs

#1 Post by dixono » Thu Jul 17, 2014 11:49 pm

hey guys just wondering if you know if these dashpots require actual dashpot oil? or do they just take the same oil that is in the engine? also is it possible to drain the oil out without removing the carb or is overfilling a big nono?

Are they Strombergs or Big SU's? SU carbs need a little oil, it's hard to overfill because if you put in too much it generally leaks out. as for what oil... expect a ton of answers: manual calls for engine oil. most English SPortscar guys swear by Motorcycle fork oil. I use ATF. I am pretty sure you will find this good for your Strombergs.

The oil acts as a shock absorber for the main enrichment piston. Book calls for motor oil but you can use most anything, racing engines use it dry but are tuned for it. As mentioned, lots use ATF. If the oil is thin, there will be faster acceleration and poorer fuel economy. Too light an oil or no oil could result in too fast an acceleration and you might run into a bit of a stumble on acceleration due to leanness. (Like accelerator pump not working on a normal carb.)

The few drops of oil it takes only goes in the small diameter hole the piston attached to the cap fits into. Any more is just overflow and will eventually get sucked through the system gumming things up and slowing down performance 'til it is gone. It self drains in short order and is burnt off in the cylinders.

well, try not to over fill... yu should see a little oil with the plunger out while looking down the bore. you don't need a lot.

I was sure they were SU's ... may have been changed by someone after I had it. I know carb work was done at one point

from pictures I can see on the web mine now has stormbergs. the only difference I can see between the two is the su's have a bigger "pot" where the oil goes. thanks for the info tho ill be oiling them up today.
