So, I got my gearbox and engine separated over the weekend from what I believed to be a 1963 lights in the grill series 2A donor vehicle. When I got into the bell housing and pulled the clutch I figured I noticed the clutch assembly is completely different compared to my 1965 project vehicle. So I got the tape measure out and its a 9.5 inch, not a 9 inch clutch...

According to 3 brothers land rovers website, the 9 inch clutch and cover (as well as being visually different from the 9 inch variant) only applies to late (1970 onwards) 2As and Series 3 Rovers. Hmmmm...

This has me a little stumped and leads to a bunch of questions that, if anyone can shed some light onto would be much appreciated:

1. Are the 9 and 9.5 inch clutches and covers interchangeable between model years?
2. Are there any other ways of identifying what year/model my gearbox is from?
3. Were the 1970 and onwards gearboxes full synchro? If so, what are the chances I have a Series III gearbox?
4. If the gearbox is Series III, what are the chances that the engine is also from a later model? Any way to differentiate between a Series 2A engine? The engine number has been ground off of the head which could point towards a sinister past...

Hi Dave

Is there any chance you could show us some pictures of what you have? There are a few variations of clutches and throw out bearing covers and internal parts, some inter-change some do not.
A series 3 has the clutch hydrolic mechanism on the left hand side. (It also is full syncho if it is not worn out).

Are you just doing the clutch or does the transmision have problems?

Hi Dave,

I had a Series 3 gearbox on my Series 2a, if I remember right (was many years ago!) you can use the series clutch (9 1/2") but you will also need to use the series 3 bellhousing.
The advantages are the all sych gearbox and in my opinion a better clutch...
There should be a suffix number on the gearbox that will tell you what type / year etc ... I believe the later ones are suffix "D" onwards?

I spoke with Mepham (thanks Matt) yesterday and based on that discussion it sounds like it's a 2A gearbox (clutch slave on the outside of bell housing) with a HD clutch upgrade so should be just a case of putting in another 9.5 inch clutch disc.

I'm not quite sure yet Victor - I've never driven the vehicle that the gearbox came from (green frame in pictures, now scrapped). It's going to need an overhaul of the gaskets and seals as a minimum as well as take a look at the 4wd selector (spring?). Hoping I don't have to get into the guts of it though.

Incidentally, I have a second box which appears to be seized and that has the different style clutch cover.

Will check the serial numbers on the boxes next time I'm in the garage.

OK, here's the gearbox number... 25216722C

Suffix "C" so according to the link below it's a 2A box without synchro on 1st and 2nd.

Bugger. I was hoping to not have to learn how to double clutch! :p

My only concern is putting a new 9.5 inch clutch disc (specced for 1970 onwards according to 3BR). I guess it ran previously with a 9.5 so it shouldn't be a big deal...
