Series Diff and Gearbox Oil

#1 Post by DrRangelove » Fri May 09, 2014 3:09 pm

Hi All,

I'm in the process of rebuilding my Series 2As axles and will be doing the gearbox at some point. I've read that EP80 is the oil to use - is this readily available in Canada? A quick google search didn't yield any positive reuslts.

I've also seen reference to EP90 - is this an acceptable alternative and any more or less available over here?

Thanks!

Dave

Hi Dave,

I just bought some gear oil today for my winch and transmission. It was from Lorco - Red line MT-90. It 's the gl4 rating you want as this is "yellow metal" safe. It was this for $26/quart or the royal purple version for $35/quart! Not cheap stuff! This is the first time I've run this stuff, usually I just ran the old crappy tire 90W gear oil so not sure of I'll even notice the difference. Not sure if the diffs have and Bronze in them so you may be able to run a cheaper (gl5) brand of 90w gear oil.

You should be able to get it a lot cheaper than that. In Calgary, you can find it for around $12. Try some of the racing supply shops.

I wish we had a racing supply shop! Victoria's a little too sleepy for that! Now if this oil was used in mobility scooters or walkers I could get it anywhere!

Might be cheaper to order some from the mainland then.

Redline shows this place:

Thanks Greg - called the commercial supplier in Nanaimo and they want $110 for an 18 liter pail. Works out to about $6/quart!
