Stub axle bushing replacement Serias IIa
Has anyone replaced the bushing in the front stub axles? I have a 1965 series IIa 88", land rover part number 217354. Here's a link selling them... http://www.hnjengineering.co.uk/pages/p ... 17354.html
It looks like this part was for Series II's but mine is a IIa...
Mine is definitely worn out but getting them seems to be next to impossible, on this side of the pond anyways....
I guess my question is should I just leave it... that seems silly but it looks like LR stopped using them and didn't put in a different design, or are newer stub axles just slightly different in that area?...
Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew
Mines a 2a so I know nothing about this part except if you decide you really need it a machine shop or engine rebuilder can probablly make you one using the correct material for less than getting 2 shipped from the mother land.

Andrew,
Contact Peter at 3 Brothers Classic Rovers, he might have it or be able to get it a bit cheaper.
I have a late Series IIA with the front axle from a late II/ early IIA and have the same bushing.
Maybe the PO swapped the front axle from an earlier truck?
Are the steering arms mounted on top of the swivel ball housing?

Re: Stub axle bushing replacement Serias IIa
So some reading suggest that the bushing is there only because at one time the old Rovers (80") used a Tactra joint instead of a UJ... They talk about the need with UJ for float and support for the Tactra joint... anyways the short story that I'm taking away from this is that the bushing isn't available anymore because it isn't needed anymore....
Here's my source...

Let me know if you think I'm wrong. (it happens...)
Thanks,
Andrew

Re: Stub axle bushing replacement Serias IIa
I have two later series one axles apart right now and neither has a bushing in any of the stub axles. The ujoint is supported on the inside with a bearing and seal, and on the outside by the drive flange.
This is a strange one.

It must be a SII axle he has up front. Here's the parts diagram;

Funny, the series one looks the same, but no part 37, and the drive flange looks a little different. Series 2 specific?

must be.....The specific SII parts are still mostly available but they are pricey!
